If you are tied on cash you need to make priorities of survival. maybe this includes reducing stuff or product pipeline, or sharpening the focus of the venture and turning down all other stuff that is out of focus. Data definitely helps but do not forget the people in your venture and customers to ask for feedback.

Start there, what is not working according to your original plans. Why is it not working? What is actually working of anything. Review the experience, is the business case still sound based on the experience so far? Is there anything about the experience that could be changed for the better? How do we do this? Are there any operational bottle necks that could be fixed? Find a way to build a new sound business case based on the new experience.

I have usually found that if an entrepreneurial venture is struggling, it could be due to an improper problem-solution fit or product-market fit. The entrepreneur(s) would not have articulated their assumptions and hypotheses about the market and the product from the end-user’s perspective. This calls for a strategic pivot to an adjacent business model where they can achieve a higher fitness on both the counts- problem and product for the customer segment that can allow them to do faster proof of concept!

Think of a startup as part of an open network between suppliers, partners, peers customers and others, it’s easier to work together than to stand alone.

As a reminder I would advice an entrepreneur that sometimes failure is unavoidable. However we can refused to be defined by our failures. Instead we can learn valuable lessons from our failures and thus failures can shape us in ways that will lead to successes in our future professional ventures.
