What do you do if your employer undervalues your contributions during a raise negotiation?

You should be well aware and mindful of your contribution to the organisation first of all, if that is not the case, the question of the employer agreeing becomes irrelevant. And still, if it is not recognised, you have two obvious answers. One is to understand and align your performance with expectations, and the second is to look for options where your value is better appreciated. The option you don't have is to sit and crib. Not if you are looking for a way out anyway.

One can't execute without a trace. If you, indeed, produced value - and it was, indeed, providing a meaningful and positive impact - there is no way you won't be able to have that on record, both in tangible and intangible form. Have your work documented, and have it meaningful.

Communication should not start at the time of the raise evaluation but all throughout the year. Keep cheerleading your personal and team achievements, see how to add value, take on projects outside of your scope, or show initiative. Sometimes a raise isn’t in the cards, but perhaps there are other things that could be valuable for you that your boss hasn’t considered, and the may be much less costly to the company. If so, explore those with your boss. Nothing ventured, nothing gained and it is worth exploring deeper.

If you are acting as a humble petitioner, putting a plea to a "godlike" boss - you are in a very toxic environment, to begin with. If you may be able to change it (and I mean - break the toxicity, not "attempt to influence"), go for it. You may end up with a major transformation on hand, and that is not a bad thing. And if you do not feel like fighting, just update your resume and get another job. If you are truly good at what you are doing, you will find another way.
