What do you do if your employer undervalues your contributions in R&D?

In my opinion, it is better to define key performance indicators. Quantifying indicators can help you a lot. However, I have realized from experience that there are always indicators that cannot be quantified.

The first and the most suitable step should be open communication. It gives one a chance to understand the perspective and also represent one's thought. Also it is important to document one's achievements and contributions. Open communication is best when taken up with a positive approach.

Keeping the employer engaged will bring acknowledgment of efforts and understanding of the outcomes.

There is an old German proverb: "andere Mütter haben auch sch?ne T?chter" (EN: "there are beautiful daughters from other mothers, too"). So, if you are really undervalued: go somewhere else! If there is one thing missing in the industry right now, then it's the high-quality R&D engineers! Do you really want to work in an environment where your contribution is not seen? Ensure that your project work directly is in alignment with the strategic goals of your organization and you understand the first-to-market advantage and the metrics for project success. Don't try to "sell" leadership on the value, find ways to align your results with what they ALREADY identified as the need, so you can showcase your brilliance in tangible ROI.
