What do you do if your employees lack creativity and innovation?

In my experience with U.S. Army medics in Hawaii, establishing trust was key to unlocking their creativity and innovation. As a leader, I found that when my team trusted me to support them and remove obstacles, they were willing to take calculated risks. If that trust isn't there, one can expect the opposite response. This trust didn't come overnight; it was built by demonstrating my commitment to their success and readiness to back them up (even if they failed). The transformation was clear: once they felt secure in this trust, they achieved heights of excellence previously unseen. In any team, trust is the bedrock for innovation; it empowers individuals to explore, fail, and ultimately succeed beyond expectations.

To find out what stops my employees from being as creative and innovative as they can be, here are two methods that work effectively: 1) I think a lack of knowledge is a big roadblock. If my team doesn't know enough, it's hard for them to think of new, creative ideas. We address this by continuously monitoring their creative progress, identifying what they need to learn to boost their creativity. This method is gradual but ensures long-term improvement in their creative abilities. 2) The second method is all about talking and listening. We cultivate a feedback culture that encourages open dialogue at all levels, enabling early identification and resolution of barriers to creativity and innovation.

If your employees lack creativity and innovation, consider if they're in roles that align with their strengths. Perhaps they would excel more in a different position. Explore mentoring, training, or upskilling opportunities to enhance their creative abilities. Some individuals might be hesitant to express creativity; ensure you provide a safe space for them. Recognising that everyone has a unique contribution to make is crucial, and fostering an environment that nurtures and leverages their strengths can lead to greater innovation.

I do ask questions: -Is it me or them? Do I give relevant support, or do they have some personal issues? -What drives them to exceed? How can I help them in it? -Have I asked them what do they need? Have I heard them? -Do I trust them?

Cultivate an environment where employees feel comfortable taking risks, sharing ideas, and expressing themselves without fear of judgment or reprisal, fostering a culture of psychological safety that nurtures creativity and innovation.

My views would be to start from the basic understanding "every individual is different and unique". Hence, one size will not fit all. As a leader we have to understand their characteristics and provide them the relevant support. Some can become creative and innovative when they are given freedom, whereas some needs just guidance, and few not only need guidance but also some push. Training, Guidance, Monitoring, some free time and team bonding can kindle out of the box thinking to churn creative & innovative results.

Set ambitious, yet achievable goals that stretch your employees' capabilities. Consider challenging every team member to share one creative idea per week with the group - emphasising the quantity and not necessarily the quality of ideas, particularly while people become comfortable with challenging the status quo (and discover it is safe to do so.) Provide a steady source of inspiration via videos and articles of interest, interesting examples and success stories from other contexts. Modelling curiosity to your colleagues will encourage them to think differently - and possibly more creatively - about their work.

I think the employees can work together on a specified goal, when they are aligned together to complete the task, being creative doesn’t help! Some on the table activities might help to understand the SWOT of employees, that might help leadership to deploy the person in that subject or taskforce.

In my experience, this might be caused by a lack of understanding of the business or of the strategic direction in which the team needs to head (on the assumption that the team is comprised of competent individuals). It is often only if one thoroughly understands the context in which they work and the direction of travel that they are (a) able to innovate, and/or (b) confident enough to stick their head above the parapet to be creative and innovative. Thus, one way to engender this creative spirit will be to ensure that they are fully briefed on the relevant aspects of their work i.e. the bigger picture. This context is critical.

When people lack creativity and innovation, one factor could be either burnout or they are not feeding their minds with enough creative content. Something a leader can do in this case is to create an environment that encourages creativity; take your team members out for an event (related to work or not), go on a field trip that will help your members relax, unwind, and reduce their stress levels... Do something fun together, as a team. Anything that will help them get back on their feet. The mind is a very powerful place, so when you are not feeding it the right content, creativity and ideas for innovation can be hard to acquire.

Do a more thorough research and analysis of the people you hire. If they are not up to your creative standards. Lack innovation than you should probably have noticed this before hiring them. People we work with should be at our own creative and innovative standards. Even inspiring. For a win, win relationship you should find inspiration in people you hire. Nothing less.
