What do you do if your emotional intelligence is tested in theatrical production?

Absolutely, practicing empathy is crucial in theater and beyond. It allows you to connect more deeply with your characters, which in turn enhances your performance and ability to engage the audience. I feel its really important to let people know how you feel. Especially if your not comfortable with how they have spoken to you. Just because we work in the arts doesn’t mean you should put up with poor communication that leaves you feeling deflated and down. Remember your in a work place. Ask yourself this “ would that person say that to me if I worked in barclays bank?” If the answer is no then its not ok backstage. Be brave tell them your not ok. Set your boundaries early so it doesn’t continue.

I believe that in order to be able to manage stress in our rehearsal rooms, wellbeing needs to be made a priority. We need to offer tools for students during their training ( technical, creatives, managers and performers) that teaches resilience and emotional intelligence so they can cope and become change makers in industry.

Once upon a time, I played Marat in a production of Marat/Sade. I pride myself on my elocution, and during rehearsals I efforted to speak as clearly as I could. In the hopes of accessing the more visceral qualities of my character, the director asked me to "Slur my words a little. Hiss from time to time. Let the spittle fly." I resisted at first.
