By delivering valuable and engaging content consistently, you'll attract followers and expand your network within the educational leadership community.

Leadership is about focus and this is no exception. Before diving into the entire world of online thought leadership, you will need a clear focus. I recommend using mental maps (search: "What is a Mind Map and How to Effectively Do It" -Atlassian has a strong resource bank) to get all possible ideas out and start to see patterns, which will help you to create a focused chain of content to find online. Most algorithms feed you more of what you pay attention to online. If you are interested in national consulting, your goal is to learn about terminology and key voices. If you are interested in early childhood education models, start there. The more you wander across topics online, the more muddled your results will be.

In the fast-paced world of social media, it's easy to get swept up in the whirlwind of connections and interactions without a clear sense of direction. Whether you're a seasoned leader or just starting on your journey, having a clear vision of what you hope to achieve is crucial. Defining your objectives not only provides clarity but also serves as a roadmap for your social media strategy. By setting specific and measurable goals, you can tailor your networking efforts to align with your aspirations. Having a clear purpose not only guides our interactions but also helps you filter through the vast sea of profiles on social media platforms. It enables you to prioritize connections & engage with individuals & groups that are most relevant.

I would then ensure that your profile on each social media platform is complete and professional. Use a clear profile picture and a compelling bio that highlights your expertise and interests, and include relevant keywords to make your profile more discoverable. I would then join LinkedIn groups, Facebook groups, and Twitter chats focused on topics of interest. Participate in discussions, share insights, and ask questions to engage with other professionals. I would also be sure to follow influential leaders, organizations, and publications to stay updated on industry news, research findings, and best practices.

Professional learning network or PLN is a place to exchange ideas, collaborate and share resources about teaching practices. 1. LinkedIn connects the like-minded teachers in staying up-to-date with the current educational trends. It also includes educational job related postings. 2. You can also create your Pinterest boards related with lesson planning, school activities or rubrics. It is an effective way to look for the new and creative ideas. 3. Choose the social media network to build your online visibility. It may be Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter. 4. The social groups, conferences or webinars helps in exploring different methods of educational technology. It helps in the personalized professional development of educators.

Choosing the right platform is essential. A wrong platform will yield poor outputs. LinkedIn is an excellent place for professionals to connect and interact. Navigation is easy and communication is made easy as well. Other professionals can see your posts too and interact with it if they so wish. WhatsApp is a good choice too. It gives some privacy to who can access the information shared. A closed group on Facebook is also an option. But overall, it is important to know what platform would best fit the focused group before making a choice of platform.

Consider the profitability & monetisation potential of your niche content. Tailor your content regularly. 4. Develop your own unique style of writing. Avoid copying. Collect the different ideas. Brainstorm & tailor them according to requirements. Consistency is the key of success in content creation. 5. Just publishing the content is not enough. Work on promoting your content regularly on the social media platforms.

Regularly share content that adds value to your network, such as industry insights, leadership tips, and relevant articles. Encourage discussions and engagement with your audience.

Continuous engagement is key to the survival of any online group. Without engagement, the group is on its way to extinction. People will get bored and lose interest. You might even see members opt out of the group without any communication. Share relevant information and resources. Make every member have a sense of ownership on the platform. Once the platform is driven by conversations that are relevant, members will show more interest and engagement will become organic.

Pick your area of interest and engage with key leaders in that field. I’ve found reading books published by educational leaders, to then post about their books and ask open ended questions to the authors to be a very effective way of expanding your social media networks!

Every leader has some generalized experience and some expertise. As you are looking to grow your professional network, map out the trends and areas of expertise you want to deepen. Follow top organizations (local and national) to see what is most pertinent to their audiences and read the comments and build a network from comments that resonate with you. Next, hone your own expertise by following voices and thought leaders in that area. Do you have deep experience in bilingual education? Search key terms and follow the top voices. The same is true whether your focus is Prek-3, math, early literacy, Career Technical Education, professional development and learning design, etc. Focus on engaging and learning from those you follow online.

Six months ago, my network was very small. Becoming the author of a new book inspired me to expand my network. It has been incredibly rewarding to meet colleagues who share similar passions. I started by searching for people in my field, contacts in cities/ states where I'd like to consult, and other authors and champions in education that I admire. As I read articles and books and find names of people that draw my interest, I immediately reach out to them to become a part of their network. This steady approach has been fruitful. It has become more meaningful as I reach out invite individuals to engage in a brief call to learn more about each other's work without expectations. It has been way more enjoyable than I anticipated!

Think about the time of day you post, it does impact engagement ? ?? What connections are you trying to make? For example, teachers, leaders or EdTech employees etc. ??

If you’re just starting out in your career or taking a new path, consider reaching out and connecting with those who are doing work that interests you. I encourage doctoral students to do this-build a network, connect with some folks who are like your personal board of directors, reach out to authors whose work you read. People are very generous. Chat, have a zoom conversations. You’ll be surprised how helpful it can be.

Be prepared to evaluate your own goal regularly. As with any learning experience, the more you delve into voices and networks online, the more you might revise your own area of interest. You might realize that you can go deep in expertise on a topic you had only had minimal exposure to before. You might realize the more time you spend on something "you've always studied", the less interest you have in it. That's the beauty of the wealth of access we have through social media. You will need to review your goals at least quarterly to ensure that the time you spend online IS productive for you professionally.
