What do you do if your creativity is key to navigating complex organizational changes?

In today's dynamic professional landscape, uncertainty can feel like a constant storm cloud but what if we transformed it into a source of limitless potential? Instead of fearing the unknown, let's embrace it as an invitation to innovate. See it as an opportunity to unleash your creativity, unlock hidden strengths within your team, and chart a course towards remarkable achievements.

Value here encompasses the benefits that creativity brings to the change process, such as flexibility in problem-solving, the ability to generate novel solutions, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. How you manage your organisation? 1- Communicate clearly to everyone: “We want to innovate.” 2- Organize the time to innovate. 3- Control activity and results. 4- Recognition.

In my experience, the elephant in the room isn't so much the uncertainty surrounding change management, but rather the lack of readiness for that uncertainty. There's a saying that goes, "When a war has a date, the tortoise is likely going to stay out of the situation." Essentially, it underscores the importance of timely preparation, even by the slower-moving team members, to prevent major panic and disaster when faced with uncertainty. Regular self-improvement and situation awareness may prepare people better for any change management process.

Embrace uncertainty as a catalyst for creativity during organizational changes. Instead of succumbing to fear, view impending changes as opportunities to innovate and explore new solutions. Take a step back to analyze the situation from various perspectives and challenge yourself to think differently about potential solutions. Recognizing the aspects of change that are beyond your control allows you to focus your creative energies on areas where you can truly make a difference. This proactive approach leverages creativity and positions you as a key player in steering your organization through complex changes.

By working together, you gain access to wider knowledge, diverse perspectives, and increased ownership of solutions. To foster collaboration, clearly define the challenge, hold open brainstorming sessions, and build a team with varied strengths. Embrace feedback and acknowledge contributions to create an environment where everyone's creativity thrives.

Three prep steps: Make sure you've got a solid trust foundation for your team. Trust that you are all working toward a common goal. Trust that you can share ideas without fear of judgement. Trust that your team is expressing truth. Realize that Change = anxiety. Even the people seemingly most comfortable with change or who thrive in chaos have anxiety about it. They've just developed tools to harness anxiety. You may not think there's anxiety, but there is. Keep it light-hearted. Some of the most serious and mentally taxing environments were also the ones where humor and humility were the best way to manage change. That proved true over six combat deployments. With that in place, it's improv time, aka brainstorm via "Yes, and...?"

Bringing people along on the journey is imperative. Try to find the common ground where there appears to be so much division. Understand the exact issues when people are resistant to change. Trying to solve the incorrect problem isn't going to take you forward.

During times of change, a fresh perspective becomes invaluable. People often become accustomed to the status quo, engaging in the same routines daily, believing certain aspects are unchangeable fixtures. This is where the importance of a fresh perspective, typically brought by a leader not deeply rooted in the day-to-day operations of a specific organizational area, becomes evident. Such a leader questions everything, even the fundamentals. It's astonishing how established norms and practices, present seemingly forever, can undergo remarkable transformations for the better when approached with a new outlook. All it takes is courage and the judicious application of a fresh perspective.

To challenge norms, you may need to: -Identify existing norms hindering creativity and adaptability. -Encourage questioning of established practices and processes. -Create a safe space for employees to voice unconventional ideas. -Lead by example by challenging norms yourself. -Foster a culture of open-mindedness and receptivity to change. -Provide opportunities for experimentation and innovation. -Recognize and reward individuals who challenge norms constructively. -Continuously evaluate and adjust norms to align with organizational goals and evolving circumstances.

Challenge Norms often requires collaboration beyond the boundaries of a single organization. Embracing open innovation and forming collaborative ecosystems can foster the cross creative of ideea, expertise and resources . Open source initiatives and innovation challenges are effective platforms fir fistering collaboration and challenge estabished norms.

When the vision is agreed by all the key stakeholders and hopefully even gotten some positive feedback from the organization through the initial comms, then the ideation can begin in earnest. Design thinking is my preferred go-to tool in the kit, and the journey can be fascinating and fun. Especially if we also bring in hypotheses and multiple POCs out of which some can be piloted and then scaled out. The whole experience is very rewarding.

You may need to prototype ideas: -Start by brainstorming potential solutions to the organizational challenges. -Select a few promising ideas to prototype. -Develop quick and low-cost prototypes to test feasibility. -Gather feedback from stakeholders and refine prototypes accordingly. -Iterate on the prototypes based on feedback and insights. -Scale up successful prototypes for broader implementation. -Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented solutions. -Adjust prototypes as needed to address emerging issues or improve outcomes.

To communicate the vision you may need to: -Clearly define the vision for the organizational changes. -Craft a compelling narrative that resonates with employees. -Use multiple communication channels to reach all stakeholders. -Provide context and rationale behind the vision. -Solicit feedback and address concerns to ensure alignment. -Empower leaders at all levels to communicate the vision effectively. -Reinforce the vision regularly through consistent messaging. -Celebrate progress and milestones to keep motivation high.

This should come before prototyping ideas. In fact, all that maybe needed by the change management personnel is to kickstart or initiate the creative process, and use it as momentum to bring the other minds into the fold. While I love the opportunity to craft creative new ideas and approaches, the satisfaction has always been way higher when I've been and to bring stakeholders and colleagues into the process. To collectively shape a vision, see the many dimensions it takes on when more people are involved, and finally become a strong shareable narrative for change has always made me love the field even more.

Feedback is so Important! Never be the smartest person in any conversation. Recognise your own processing as you listen but never let it cloud you only use it to sustain momentum. Your eagerness to succeed can lead to blunder.

We have to understand that in isolation we don't have all the answers. By leveraging feedback there is far greater an opportunity that we will succeed even if it means taking a few steps back following the feedback.

Leveraging constructive feedback is the critical ingredient to improvement, growth and overall success. Feedback allows individuals or organisations to conduct a critical assessment of the situation and make decisions that are progressive and meaningful, thereby leaving a lasting impact. Constructive feedback is also crucial as it allows individuals or organisations to feed-forward, which positions the individual or organisation for a sustainable future.

Encourage diverse perspectives, embrace brainstorming sessions, and leverage innovative problem-solving tools like design thinking to generate fresh ideas and adapt effectively to evolving circumstances.

Create, setup and facilitate multiple channels to engage leaders and teams. Dojos, labs, forums, communities .. get a bit of a buzz going, but also carefully nurture it so it doesn't fizzle out early. Let people know, and recognise/reward participation and contribution. If there are introverts who often have great ideas, welcome them in and give them time and encouragement. After the initial bump is crossed, they can be wonderful sources of creative ideas.
