What do you do if your creative work is constantly interrupted by distractions?

I've made it a rule in my family: I block 3h twice a week for creative work. During that time, I turn my phone on focus mode. Only people who call me 2x can get through (in case of an emergency). Otherwise, you won't reach me. I then work for 45 minutes, have a 5-7 minutes break, and repeat that until the 3 hours are over.

I create 4 one-hour time chunks per day. I shut down all social media interruptions and silence messages on my phone. After the hour is complete, I may go for a short walk, or grab a snack. Then I go on to the next time chunk. Creating 4 blocks of time, allows me to do things in between so I don't feel like I'm just sitting all day. This helps me get things done and stay focused on the task at hand!

I will create a dedicated work space and set boundaries to tell others I am working on creative project without disturb then turn off the notification in my device and train myself to recognize distractions or take break to take a rest and recharge makes me concentrate when I am return to my creative project

Distractions are the biggest creativity killers. Unfortunately we now live in a social media era, where the platforms have been design to first distract us and then addict us. We need to make sure that we place our phone away and give ourselves a designated head and physical space to really think about things properly... good ideation requires time and a diverse collaboration.

Establish clear boundaries with colleagues and yourself to minimize interruptions during creative work. Communicate designated focus times and create physical or virtual barriers to signal your availability for uninterrupted creative work.

Email, slack, whatsapp and cloud drive notification are a constant interrupter... I think every day we spend more time on side quests then our main story... so it's important to step away from your computer, grab a meeting room or go outside with your colleagues and just talk about what you are working on. This will allow you to get focused and figure things out properly.

Utilize technology to your advantage by employing tools like website blockers, notification management apps, or time-tracking software. Adjust device settings to limit distractions and create a conducive digital environment for sustained creativity.

Make technology work for you, and not the other way around. Our current interaction with technology is a constant booming of information, in various ways, which creates a lot of mental sound, making it impossible to concentrate on being creative. I believe creativity is outside the digital world, and more into the ordinary things. Day-to-day activities that we take for granted, practice those activities in a conscious way, let me know how creativity comes after that.

Dealing with persistent interruptions, particularly from frequent meetings, while focusing on creative work like UX and UI design, is a daily challenge I encounter. Working within a matrix organizational structure means engaging in numerous meetings with various team leaders, which can occupy a substantial portion of my schedule. To address this issue effectively, I've implemented the time blocking method. This approach allows me to communicate my priorities clearly and allocate dedicated blocks of time specifically for creative tasks. By leveraging this strategy, I've been able to enhance productivity and safeguard essential creative thinking periods within my role.

Time blocking may work great only if you're not a neurodiverse who has a creative, jumpy mind and soul! Yes for time blocking but please don't over stress yourself about limits and the order of your schedule. You can change the order of tasks and still manage the timeline in a day while feeling better and more gentle for yourself.

The time-blocking method really works. We're not all productive at all times. That's why it's much better to think of your day as time blocks based on your productivity levels. Here's what I do - I divide my time into major chunks. Based on my productivity, I have Mornings (9 am -12 pm), After Gym (8 pm - 10 am), Before Gym (3 pm - 5 pm) and Noon being the least productive (12 pm - 2 pm) I choose to do the most important works based on these blocks. Most important works = Most productive time block.

Break down complex creative tasks into smaller, manageable chunks to maintain momentum and reduce the impact of interruptions. Set achievable milestones and focus on completing incremental steps, allowing for easier re-engagement after interruptions.

You can't go wrong if you can break complex things into minuscular tasks. Breaking down your tasks helps you to solve your problems and finish your laborious tasks easily. Always break down your tasks into fine particulate tasks, that won't take more than an hour at max. After completing the tasks you can give yourself a small reward.

Don't try to eat the whole pie in a single bite, it's impossible. Better break it down, divide, and share it, the result of the experience is more enriching.

If I told you that today you were going to bake a cake, but you had never done so, never stepped in a kitchen, or even used an oven it would feel overwhelming, daunting, and a little bit hopeless. By breaking down your tasks, much like when following a recipe, you're able to complete each step in a manageable fashion. In learning, this enables you digest the information without taxing your brain. In work it allows us to focus on what needs to be prioritized without getting stuck in the weeds. When in doubt, take a deep breath and break it down into a list of smaller, achievable tasks.

Incorporate mindfulness techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, or mindfulness exercises to cultivate focus and resilience against distractions. Practice present-moment awareness to redirect attention back to creative tasks and enhance concentration.

For me, meditation is hard. I tried everything, and it hasn't worked. So what I did is to create my own mindfulness space and it's been swimming hahahahah. There is no way you can get too distracted right? There is no phone, no sound, no talking, and water makes things better. What I'm trying to transmit here is, create your own mindfulness moment.

I first come to my WHY. Why am I wanting to contribute, this allows me to tap deeper into authentic expression. Allowing for space such as mindfulness and deep focus help immensely. Also, speaking with other team members to collaborate and hear multiple perspectives/desires helps me to expand my vision. Knowing and appreciating what people are longing for helps me to feel like I am creating and expressing meaningful, impactful and thought provoking content/works/presentations/classes.

Write things down and get them out of your head. Mindmap some thoughts and outcomes. Close your eyes and concentrate on one thing at a time.

Learn to listen before speaking, this will allow you to see the full picture of the situation and evaluate what position to take.

Maslow theorizes that, in order to achieve self-actualization (highest creative output), we must satisfy our base needs: hunger, thirst, regulatory, etc. I believe it’s important to stay flexible to your needs in order be as creative as possible. If I find I’m easily distracted, I ask myself the basics: “Am I thirsty? Am I well fed? Are my bills paid? Is the space I’m trying to be creative in as clean as it can be?” Once I’ve allowed myself the flexibility to tend to these things, I find it’s easier to achieve a more fulsome creative output.

Flexibility is a crucial aspect of managing creative work effectively. Being flexible allows you to adapt to changes, explore new ideas, and overcome obstacles that may arise during the creative process. Flexibility also enables you to incorporate feedback and new information into your work, enhancing its quality and relevance. By remaining open to different approaches and perspectives, you can find innovative solutions and push the boundaries of your creativity.

I have struggled with this for years due to ADHD and nuerodivergence. Any interruption can take me out of my flow state and returning can take 20-30 minutes. Sadly, you cannot avoid distractions all the time. So take the time to learn what helps you get into flow state. It may be music, lower lighting, a more comfortable seat, or you can even try to use smells to trigger it. Fond our what it is and use it to condition yourself.
