I agree that there will be bias in the decisions due to the good or adverse experience in the past. If I may take an example for contractor selection, there will be a past experience factor affecting the decision. For a particular work there will be good or bad experiences with contractors that have previously worked with you. So we can give chance to the contractor, new or old by giving a small portion of work and make decision on the present performance.

No project goes through on construction issue 1 drawings until the end. I hate the bias culture that is in construction these days. I do not let my package just carry on if I think the "design team" have got it wrong and it will affect follow on trades. Unfortunately the modern culture thinks otherwise. I currently have this issue on my site and it is a design team cock up. I call the following trades and show them the end result and then ask them "is this what you expected". They have said No. Work has stopped because of future issues and they're working elsewhere until a resolution is found. That is the unbiased way.

I would simply say, always refer to professional ethics and code of conduct. This will usually drive you back to the right decision in construction and protect you from any bias or influences..

As a construction / project manager one has to analyse the decision and assess the factors which have gone into the decision making or selection process. If there is a bias observed, the same need to be analysed further, fact checks to be done. Further to this an open discussion on the points of hurt/ concern need to be discussed with the contractor / stakeholders and solutions to be found. This will decide the forward path.

I better have bias! The only way I can make a good decision is to have experience from either my past or training to know what decision to make. My bias will ask questions before a task is performed because there were missed steps in the past, so I know to ask those questions to make sure bases are covered so there’s no mistakes
