What do you do if your communication skills are lacking during an interview?

According to my experience as a recruiter, preparing for the interview will strengthen your ability to demonstrate your communication skills during the interview. You can get interview mentoring. Before the interview, researching the company's culture, employee profile and the people who will be interviewing you, and knowing them in advance can make communication easier. It is important that you are relaxed and feel positive.

If you are unable to perform well during the interview and feel that your communication skills are to be blamed, as a communication skills coach I disagree. During the stressful situations, when the stakes are high most of us crumble. It is not that we do not know the answer; it is because we are unable to think on our feet and hence are unable to articulate it. Apart from preparing well on our technical skills, it is important that we develop self awareness, learn and practice the techniques to communicate seamlessly during stressful situations and practice positive self talk will certainly help us to crack the interview effortlessly and land in our dream job.

Based on my 13-years of industry experience, improving your communication skills for interviews is a common challenge. I suggest reflecting on where you struggle—clarifying ideas, confidence, or organizing thoughts? Practice active listening to fully understand questions before responding. Prepare by researching common questions and rehearsing answers to feel more confident. Seek feedback from friends or mentors. Consider a communication course or workshop. Regular practice in conversations can also help. Improving takes time, but each step forward enhances your abilities.

It's been my client's experience that most communication issues arise from a lack of preparation and being legitimately nervous about the interview. 90% of the interview questions come from the job description and your resume. The job description tells you what problems the hiring manager wants to solve. The research and prep is about having a strategy for those problems. The tactical communication issue involves formulating "tell me about a time" answers in STARs or other frameworks. That takes practice. You can use our friend ChatGPT to analyze any job description and ask it to create an interview guide, including practice questions. You can answer those questions on video until you are comfortable and smooth out the gaps.

Communication skills are important in both work and personal life. They're crucial for keeping relationships strong, whether in business or everyday situations. It's important to develop these skills as they're essential for life. Practice them just like you would practice technical skills. Try mock interviews with experts, friends, or peers. Record yourself and watch how you speak and behave. Non-verbal communication is especially important for successful communication. Practice these skills in your daily life and watch yourself improve.

Communication is about content and style. The lack of finesse to express is exacerbated by the unpreparedness of the interviewee. For an interview to go well, one needs to prepare by- understanding their career goals; knowing their competencies - both strength and weakness and backing them up with instances to showcase them; building their personal brand and finally researching the company, role and their fit for the same. With this level of understanding an interviewee is unlikely to fumble even if they are not the best communicators.

Have you got someone you can role play with or practice with? Practice makes permanent, so by working on these skills, you will get better at communication. Just ensure you are working on the right area.

Prepare thoroughly beforehand, researching common interview questions and practicing responses aloud. Focus on active listening, allowing the interviewer's questions to guide your answers. Speak clearly and confidently, maintaining good eye contact and positive body language. Pause to gather your thoughts before responding, ensuring clarity and coherence. Use specific examples from past experiences to illustrate your skills and accomplishments. Ask insightful questions to demonstrate engagement and interest in the role. Seek feedback from mock interviews or trusted peers to identify areas for improvement. Continuously refine and practice your communication skills to build confidence and proficiency over time.

Simplifying your responses can greatly improve how you communicate during an interview. Make a conscious effort to keep your answers concise and focused. Stick to answering the question asked without going off on tangents. A useful technique is to structure your responses using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result), which helps in organizing your thoughts and presenting them clearly. This approach not only makes it easier for interviewers to follow your points but also highlights your ability to communicate effectively and efficiently.

Unless the question is on the concept, explaining the use case, a similar situation that you have faced and overcame can be one of the best forms to answer the question. Business storytelling always wins, not too many people follow it and it can leave a lasting impression. Second, is, a breakdown of the response: 1. if the question was long, summarize it first and confirm from the interviewer that you understood it right. 2. Break-down the response into multiple sections, explain that you will be answering the questions in different sections along with mentioning the section names. 3. Start answering each section, pause, ask if they have any cross-questions or want to proceed. 4. This technique can be used for tech, product, situational Qs.

Giving an interview can be stressful at times. You may feel prepared, but the right words may escape you when you need them the most. Keeping your responses simple can help ease the interviewer's nerves. At times, a simple explanation is the best way to go. It doesn't reflect any less on your skills, abilities, or experience. In fact, it highlights your ability to explain complex technical or logical concepts in a simple manner, which demonstrates a good understanding of the concept.

In an interview, keep to concise and simple sentences. Responses shouldn’t be too short nor too much. Try to provide enough information by not talking too much since time is factored in every interview. Listen to each question and understand them before providing answers. In the event where a question isn’t clear, ask for clarifications before answering.

Listening is an art and to communicate effectively, we must be good listeners. Speak only when you have understood the ask. If you don't understand, ask for clarification and listen carefully to understand the request, then respond. Only then your response be appropriate or will resonate with the query. Otherwise, it may be the best response to a completely different question.

Take notes during the interview. Write down what they are saying. Make notes on points you want to make. If you are struggling with what you are feeling, right down your feelings. Taking notes shows respect.

Listen to understand, not to respond. I know that this can be hard to do sometimes, but we must try our best to do it. Also, take notes if you need to. Once you understand what is being said, you should be able to answer with more confidence. This is a simple tip, but very useful.

Active Listening: Listen Carefully: Make sure you understand the question before answering. Paraphrase or ask for clarification if needed. Engage with the Interviewer: Show that you are listening by nodding and responding appropriately to the interviewer’s comments and questions.

Active listening is about paying attention - something you just can't fake. Don't be constantly focused on what you're going to say next because you'll miss important details. Really be present in the interview - ask questions and create thoughtful responses. It's okay to slow things down - the interviewer will appreciate it.

After you listen actively, ask for a bit of time to process what you just heard. Taking some time to process what you just heard should enable you to give a better response. See my tip on point 4 about active listening in point 7 for special cases.

Try to speak more slow by gathering your thoughts as you speak. Speaking fast might make you say things you might not have meant to. It’s normal to have pauses in between words, it shows that you’re thinking through whatever you’re saying and making sure to transfer the exact meaning of whatever you want to put across.

At times, we get sad for not clearing an interview which is natural but learning something new from each such opportunity should be celebrated. 1. Sometimes, during the interview itself, in cross-questions, we realize how we could have answered better. Make a note. 2. Ask for feedback from the interviewer and stress upon providing honest opinions. Make notes. 3. Post-interview, do self-evaluation as early as possible as we tend to forget. 4. Make a list of all you did well, concepts answers which you did not know, what you could have answered better and how. What other questions, can be prepared based on the flow of the interview? 5. Every interview is a highly valuable but free opportunity to improve irrespective of the outcome.

A candidate for entry-level finance position was quite nervous and fidgety in the panel interview. He had a national rank and the interview seemed a letdown because of his communication skills. Post the interview, he waited outside and managed to catch me and ask what I thought he could have done differently. I was empathetic and shared my authentic feedback with him. He received the feedback well and seemed more settled in how he was communicating. Luckily, our panel had a gap available after lunch and I checked whether he would be keen to join us again, it worked out fine with the panel and the person was finally offered a position. He was able to recover a lost opportunity because of his keenness to learn and receive feedback.

Providing and receiving feedback can be a challenging task. Our minds are naturally inclined to take negative feedback negatively. However, seeking feedback is a positive and valuable approach in itself. Also giving feedback in the right manner is a skill. Feedback should always be on the topic that is sought. It is always good to ask for feedback after an interview, as it can help identify any gaps or mistakes made during the interview and later we can work toward correcting the same and be prepared for the next interview.

Stop trying to impress and just focus on connecting with the person you are talking to. Once you remove the focus from yourself, the pressure will drop and you can more easily be yourself. Practice being yourself in different contexts and it will start to feel natural. Being this way will also allow your strengths to blossom.

Continuous Improvement: Professional Development: Enroll in communication skills workshops, public speaking courses, or join groups like Toastmasters to continuously improve your skills. Reading and Learning: Read books and articles on effective communication, and watch videos or attend webinars on interview skills.

What you say is just as important as how you say it. Practice the content of your elevator pitch (your top 3-4 skills as they relate to the JD, specific examples of you excelling leveraging 3 skills and the # of years in your industries(s) until your response sounds poised, confident and spontaneous. Once you’ve thoroughly practiced what you will say, focus practicing on how you will communicate : smile, make direct eye contact, ask strategic questions that portray your knowledge of industry and the company. Keep your responses brief. Be enthusiastic because the JD excites you and you look forward to learning about the culture, the team and the challenges faced by the company. With practice, your communication skills will be solid.

If you have ADHD or something that makes communicating difficult, please inform your interviewer. It may be helpful for you to take notes or have extra time to give your responses. Try not to be embarrassed about your situation. I know it can be annoying ( I have ADHD and other things going on), but if people know, they should be able to better accommodate you. Just try your best either way.

Be honest and open if you perceive you aren't communicating well. Remember not everybody is great at interviewing. (It can be as nerve wracking being the interviewer as being the person interviewed!) The interviewer may adapt their approach
