You simply have to learn and flex your communication muscles if you want to lead any team. I often find that startup founders, especially CTO or CFO types, de prioritizing communication skill requirements. This is a mistake! You must assess what the issue is? If you are having difficulty in how you talk to others, learn emotional intelligence. If you feel you are stuck in influencing others, learn and practice influence frameworks. If you feel you are paralyzed in public speaking, take improv classes. All these can be learned but you must put effort. Don't forget to be authentic and ask for feedback from your team.

I disagree wholeheartly! Learn from the 2nd best, never the best! The best are often outliers that has exceptional skills and results. The 2nd or 3rd best (refering to the 2nd quartile) are more realistic in results and skill sets. The best may be aspirational, and will likely result in unrealistic expectations and may even lead to more self doubt or lack of confidence, keys to success. Focus on your best version of your self, not the best out there. Read many books related to your skills and industry. Write your own thoughts and or articles about your topics, it will change your mindset.

Identify leaders or professionals whose communication style you admire and study how they convey their messages, handle questions, or engage with their audience. Books, TED talks, and workshops can also be great resources. I watched TED talks and noted how speakers managed to convey complex ideas with clarity and charisma. I also attended workshops to observe the techniques used by effective communicators firsthand.

The best speakers in the world have also fumbled. Speak on the topics of which you have thorough knowledge about. Practice speaking slowly. Decrease the number of words per minute. You get more time to think. Practice pauses to tackle the fear of fumbling. Don't worry about the wrongs. If you know before speaking, what you have to speak, how you have to speak & how much to speak, you will definitely get results. You must know why, what, to whom, and how much to communicate. Only speak when your words pass through these 3 gates - → what I am going to speak is beneficial for anyone? → what I on going to speak is true? → what I am going to say is not hurting others? You must be clear about these 3 questions Be clear on your thoughts, speech, words, mind, values, and character.

I started to prepare key points in advance for meetings and presentations, focusing on what was most relevant and valuable to the audience. This preparation helped eliminate unnecessary information and kept communications impactful.

I set aside time each month to reflect on my communication experiences, what worked, what didn’t, and how I could improve. Ever skill must be learned and developed forever, compounding is the true key to success. As your "essential" communication skills have developed or you have outsourced the "impossible to get right" types, perhaps venture out into different communications groups, such as personal interest groups to practice in a non-pressure or non-professional environment. Find real, tangible mentors, some more experienced, and sometimes the "up and commers" may provide unique perspective. Mentors from other industries are very useful, most innovative processes come from other industries.

Remember the importance of non-verbal communication, such as body language, tone of voice, and eye contact. These can significantly impact how your message is received. I realized that my body language sometimes closed off during difficult conversations. Working on maintaining open, engaging non-verbal cues helped make my communications more effective and welcoming.

Body language is more important than words. On the phone, our body language is your voice through tonality, pace, breathing, pauses etc. In video, your partial body language is viewable, as is that of your audience, use this to your advantage. Try to analyze yourself and audience. Ask to record the interaction and refer back and pick up on both your body cues and your audience. In person is the most forgiving on body language as it is projected and easy for both parties to understand. Use and interpret it wisely. As with any communication to any audience, every word, phrase, eye contact or look away pushes your audience to like and understand you more or less. Do your best to increase your esteem and recover in the downer moments

Sharing a slightly different perspective here. People who may have difficulty speaking about their business can often speak very well about their family. The point I am trying to make is that a person may become too conscious of themselves when discussing their business, or they might fear being judged. I had a colleague who used to have challenges communicating with authorities, but otherwise, he was spot on. So basically, it is a mindset—his fear of being judged—which was causing overthinking and not allowing him to speak freely. If that is the case, seek help from professionals. If there is some other issue, perhaps you need to find a co-founder or a star employee to assist you.
