What do you do if your clients are struggling to find their passion and purpose?

Ditch the passion fairytale. Passion is overrated. Most of us stumble into greatness, not leap into it with a burning fire in our hearts. Use passion to guide you only. Then put in the action. If you haven't figured out the purpose it's also fine. Say yes to life, and you'll figure that out as well. These are not things you learn in books but they get discovered through experience.

Life's passions reveal themselves only when we deeply connect with ourselves through introspection and self-awareness. In my experience, even unknowingly, when we challenge ourselves or ponder our life's worth and how we can add value to it, we begin to uncover deeper purposes that fuel our growth and fulfillment. I firmly believe that we are meant for greatness, and asking ourselves meaningful questions can be enlightening. There are no set parameters, nor is it essential to know our purpose right away. I've learned that fully enjoying various aspects of life and being aware of that enjoyment can reveal our true purpose.

Leaning into your curiosity is the best place to start. Remove the pressure of finding you ‘passion, your ‘purpose’ or your ‘why’. It’s all just jargon pushed on by popular media. Unpack what’s truly important to you by getting crystal clear on your values. Talk to your friends. Engage in self reflection. See the process as a fun adventure. Play!!

Plus, you can learn from every single person around you. If you are not learning, there are no excuses. What will you learn today?

They can journal about the times they feel most alive and engaged. This can help identify patterns or activities that bring them joy. Ask them to seek feedback from friends, family, and colleagues about when they seem most passionate and alive.

Encouraging clients to explore a variety of interests and activities with curiosity is essential for uncovering their passions and purpose. I often suggest they step outside their comfort zone and try new things, whether it's attending workshops, volunteering, or picking up hobbies they've never considered before. It's all about approaching with curiosity and an open mind, without feeling pressured to find an immediate answer. By exposing themselves to different experiences, clients can discover hidden passions and interests that resonate deeply. I also remind clients that this process is a journey, and it's okay if they don't have all the answers right away. Embrace the journey and enjoy the process of exploring new possibilities.

Looking for your key areas of strengths and specialisation it is good not only to seek external feedback, but also to self reflect on this topic and to run some discovery tasks. Here is my feedback gathering manual: Self: List achievements. Identify skills behind each success to find strengths. Coworkers: Request feedback on strengths and areas to improve. Review past work evaluations. Family/Friends: Ask for their perspective on your strengths, seeking examples. Personality Tests: Take personality tests (few of them and reflect on the results).

Do a couple of tests: VIA Character Strengths, principlesyou, Gardner's intelligence types, DISC, from Surrounded by Idiots. Ask your friends, coworkers and family how they see you. Write it all down in a self awareness profile. I do this all the time with the people I coach.??????

I advise my clients to use tools like value-sorting cards or lists to help them prioritize their values, which can guide them toward fulfilling activities. I also utilize strengths assessment tools like Gallup's CliftonStrengths to help clients understand their natural competencies.

Encourage your clients to share their goals with supportive friends, family members, or accountability partners who can help keep them on track. Regular check-ins and progress reviews can provide valuable feedback and encouragement, reinforcing their commitment to their chosen path.

We are our own biggest barriers. If we can reflect back to our clients what they already know but are resistant to embracing, then that is where transformation occurs. This is separate from passion or purpose, and change is different for everyone. Sometimes extreme measures and drastic changes are needed. Sometimes small steps to reach comfort are needed. It is up to us to understand which is needed at what time.

Embracing change and cultivating a growth mindset go hand in hand. Remind your clients that setbacks and challenges are inevitable on their journey to discovering passion and purpose. Encourage them to view these obstacles as opportunities for learning and growth, rather than reasons to give up. By adopting a growth mindset, they can approach challenges with resilience and perseverance, ultimately fueling their progress toward their goals.

Generally, it shouldn’t be difficult to find our passion and purpose, as they are the essence of our existence. However, we are often misguided by family, friends, and society, leading us to assume passions and purposes that aren’t truly meant for us. The first step in discovering our passion and purpose is to let go of the facades we've adopted. This requires courage, as it means going against the expectations of those around us. By shedding our false selves, we uncover our authentic selves, which inherently carry our true passion and purpose. Finding our genuine passion and purpose not only liberates us but also integrates us, making us more authentic.

Identify Limiting Beliefs: Begin by helping clients identify any beliefs that may be holding them back from discovering their passion and purpose. Examine the Evidence: Encourage clients to examine the evidence supporting these limiting beliefs. Are there instances where they have succeeded or shown interest in activities related to their potential passions? Explore Alternate Perspectives: Guide clients in exploring alternative perspectives on their limiting beliefs. Help them consider how their beliefs might change if they approached the situation from a different angle or considered the opinions of others. Reframe Negative Thoughts: Assist clients in reframing negative thoughts into more empowering ones.

Continuously remind them that finding one's passion and purpose is often a journey that doesn't have a clear or immediate endpoint, and it requires patience and persistence.

Finding passion and purpose is a matter of time. A few coaching sessions may not help. Coaching itself may not help clients find purpose in their lives. What can help them is time to explore, experiment and see things from different perspectives. This awareness is possible through coaching if the client is willing to learn. It can happen during coaching or later during a client’s self-reflection. So, letting the client reach a state of awareness is essential as it can give them space to find purpose.
