What do you do if your client's feedback is challenging?

I've learnt to take away feelings from my work. It can be very easy to be precious with your work that you can sometimes forget you are working for the client. Taking a step back and assesing the feedback allows you to collaborate with the client to reach middle ground. If they know what they want then it's much more easier.

The first stage you present to the client should be done in the most efficient and inexpensive way possible. Only when you have done hours of work to be asked to make changes do you become enraged or emotional. Cover yourself, and work smarter not harder. Communicate, Iterate and work WITH your client and you will both be happy.

Email tennis should be avoided at ALL COSTS. There is nothing better than speaking face to face (on video call if needed) Discuss and work together. Be sure to follow any call with an email summary and ensure all changes are CLEARLY WRITTEN so that there can be no mistake. A client will make time for you as long as you make time for them and create a wonderful customer experience. There is nothing worse than not hearing from someone you are working with only to come into issues down the line.

Prepare for all eventualities. You should know exactly what, where and how you plan to take a project forward. This is all established before you start in the planning stage. If a client then changes their mind or wants to make a change that is out of scope. You have already stipulated the costs and you must be knowledgeable enough to provide alternative solutions whilst on the call. You will appear confident and dependable, this however will come with practise.

If something is not in the proposal or clearly detailed then it is your own fault and you may have to make unpaid changes. If you detail everything then the client signs they must adhere to the contract.
