You can use existing models, methods, or techniques to guide your process, or create your own based on your needs and preferences. Alternatively, you might challenge yourself to tackle more complex, ambiguous, or novel problems that require strategic thinking. Examples of strategic thinking tools include SWOT analysis for assessing strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats; SMART goals for setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals; SCAMPER for generating ideas by asking questions based on seven verbs; and PDCA cycle for implementing and improving solutions by following four steps.

The fourth step is to reflect and improve your strategic thinking skills over time. You can use self-review, feedback, or data to measure your progress and outcomes, and identify areas for improvement . Additionally, you should celebrate your successes and learn from your failures. When reflecting on your strategic thinking, ask yourself questions such as: what did you do well and struggle with? What did you learn and what can you do differently next time? What were the results and how did they align with your goals? How did you add value and impact to your organization or stakeholders? Strategic thinking is not a fixed trait; it is a skill that can be cultivated by practicing, learning, and receiving feedback. By following these steps, you can become a more strategic thinker in your career.
