What do you do if your business goals seem out of reach?

It’s critical to set goals, as goals fuel direction and intention. But if the goals are unattainable they can fuel frustration and demolish progress. So it’s important to take a step back and reassess the goal. Sometimes the goal is right but the timeline is the issue. In that case you need to first fix the timeline and build more achievable milestones. What some individuals don’t realize that having achievable milestones and getting to them fuel a sense of fulfillment and progression which fuels the way forward. When assessing the goal it’s important to realize if anything has also changed from the time of setting it, that requires adjusting the goal itself. It’s important to realize reassessing a goal doesn’t mean you have failed.

The key word here is "seems" out of reach. It's important to realize that our perspective of a situation can differ from the reality. One of the best ways to readjust your perception is through reassessing your goals by way of tracking smaller milestones. The progress made towards a goal proves valuable in keeping you focused, motivated and excited about where you're headed. Keep your perspectives in check!

When business goals feel distant, it's time to reassess. Break them down into manageable steps, prioritize tasks, and seek guidance. Setting goals that are out of reach is like setting yourself up for failure. Reassess your goals in terms of market, time, resources, and capabilities. If your mind thinks of it as unattainable it is a game lost even before playing. In your and your team's mind, the goals should be as real and as achievable as their weekend plans. A sure short thing.

What may look like an easy target to you might not appear the same to the rest of the team. The intention here is alignment and that comes only after genuine feedback is incorporated. Now, of course, the leaders will have a bigger goal but it is the team who has to work towards it. So incorporating their feedback is essential. The feedback can be about the goal, about the toad map to achieve that goal, and about the resources the team will need to achieve that goal.

Transform overwhelming goals into a strategic game of chess. By prioritizing tasks, you focus on moves that position you closer to checkmate—your ultimate goal. It's not just about doing more; it's about targeting efforts where they'll have the most impact, delegating or pausing less critical tasks. This approach turns goal achievement into an art form, where every action is deliberate and every resource is optimized.

Prioritizing tasks is not just about efficiency; it's a strategic decision-making process. By focusing on high-impact activities, you're essentially applying the Pareto Principle or the 80/20 rule, where 80% of results come from 20% of efforts. This approach not only accelerates progress towards goals but also optimizes resource allocation, ensuring that time, energy, and finances are invested in areas that yield the most significant returns.

The best way to achieve a big goal is to break it down into milestones and even smaller tasks. Prioritize these tasks and set accountability it. Measure the movement of these priority tasks and your chances of achieving the set goals multiply. Remember, in each goal, there will be tasks that at the non-priority one, I call them the frills and the fancies, those can be dealt at a later stage. The prioritization you do at this stage will set the pace of your team.

Goals are directions, not destinations. A few months ago I attended a seminar with James Clear, author of Atomic Habits. During the hour he said something that overwhelmingly stuck with me. "You don't rise to the heights of your goals. You fall to the level of your Systems." In today's landscape, it's easy for people to set goals that promise the world. But the challenge is that if you have no frame of reference to conceptualise your ambitions, your mind and body automatically zone out & trigger the procrastination cycle in favour of short term dopamine reward to combat the uncomfortability of indecision. Taking a Marginal Gains approach of 1% better every day will break the goal down in achievable and realistic daily or monthly tasks.

Achieving a goal is like solving an equation, where there will be some constants and variables at play together aiming tp achieve a desired result. In cases of goals, the result is the goal we are after. Some things will be constant like time line etc. And some things are variable like skills... Now in case of achieving a goal think of skills in 2 ways. 1. Skills that your existing team can acquire. 2. Skills you need to acquire in the form of additional resources. Do not work with a closed mindset. You have a set goal and a set timeline, let the path aka the strategy & resources be accompanied by few variables.

In a world where the only constant is change, adaptability isn't just an asset; it's your secret weapon. When the usual paths to goals grow overgrown, carve out new ones. Think of it as a strategic evolution—exploring uncharted marketing territories, reshaping your sales approach, or even reimagining your business model. This mindset doesn’t just navigate obstacles; it transforms them into stepping stones.

Es probable que un empresario se encuentre con dificultades, como la falta de financiación o la competencia de empresas más grandes. Si es resiliente, podrá aprender de sus errores, adaptarse a las nuevas situaciones y seguir adelante. Para mantener la resiliencia, podemos seguir estos consejos: 1. Aceptar que los contratiempos son parte del camino: No hay camino al éxito sin obstáculos. 2. Aprender de los errores: Cada error es una oportunidad para aprender y mejorar. 3. Mantener una mentalidad positiva: Enfocarse en las soluciones y no en los problemas. 4. Recordar las razones detrás de sus objetivos: Tener una visión clara de lo que se quiere lograr. 5. Celebrar los logros: Reconocer y celebrar los éxitos, por peque?os que sean.

As time goes by, we have multiple goals and one often loses sight. And only at the end of the year, does one realizes that they missed achieving XYZ. This happens because the various small goals are not strategically signed to the bigger picture, and also because of a lack of resilience. Lack of resilience comes again from 2 things, either it is lack of purpose or lack of / delayed rewards. Yes we humans like instant gratification, and it plays an important role in maintaining the momentum.

I am uncomfortable with the entire premise of the statement we started with because it's from a lack, fixed mindset. The quality of your answers is fully dictated by the quality of your questions so the first thing a Leader needs to do is build their ability to ask the best first question to get the results you want. So to start, So I would encourage people to reframe the initial question to be: Why do these goals feel out of reach? And then work from there. Nothing is out of reach if you have the right team, concept, enough time ambition, and most importantly mindset. From there you start solving the problems to make the goal attainable and are likely to get better results.
