What do you do if your Business Analysis skills are outdated?

If I find my Business Analysis skills outdated, I'd immediately take action to update and enhance them. Prioritizing continuous education, I would enroll in relevant courses, workshops, and webinars focusing on the latest trends, technologies, and methodologies in the field. Joining professional networks and forums could offer insights into industry advancements and peer recommendations. I’d also seek mentorship from seasoned professionals to gain practical advice and guidance. Embracing agile and data analytics tools, I would practice applying new knowledge to real-world projects, ensuring my skills remain competitive and aligned with current market demands.

I personally think it is crucial to have a recurring self-assessment process and to keep oneself informed of new trending/in demand skills in the BA field. This is what I do at the end of every year and I use this instance to identify where I need new skills (both to deliver effectively at work and to work towards my career plan). Then I put up a plan to work daily/weekly on these skills and as I learn, try to make use of these new skills in my daily work as a way to practice and to make sure I do not limit myself to theoretical learning only.

There is an interesting trend today. Specialists who perform their function very well may not be as in demand as less skilled specialists for one main reason - they cannot present their individual skills as advantages. For example, in document design, a good specialist creates user-friendly documents that pose no issues during implementation. However, such a specialist may not know the name of their skill and might not pass an interview.

I think this question is very important. For me i will join more professional groups online to strength my network and professional exposures. I will invest in more trainings to upgrade my skills and know where the knowledge gap is for an improvement. Learning is continuous and should always be a top priority for a business analyst.

The best way to transport my point of view of lifelong learning is, to talk about my basic settings to my business surounding. My philosophical approach is to avoid to lose the contact of the skill requirements. Its not easy to close a big gap. You can also quickly lose your professional degree

BA is an ever evolving area of study and there will always be new frameworks specially with the new businesses like AI, Green energy, sustainability.

There are 1000s of professional BAs who collaborated and put together a body of knowledge called BABoK. Keep your ego aside and give it a read. I couldn’t stress this enough to the BAs that think they outlived the role and want to venture into Scrum Master or Product owner role. Know where you stand with the BABoK and see if you have learned the skills defined there. If yes then be in the IIBA chapter, you become the contributor to enhance the BABoK. Your chance to contribute. Shu Ha Ri. Learn first and be humble until you master. Get involved with your local IIBA chapter. Business Analysis is not swallowed by Agile or Scrum. Stop chasing trends. Again, Get involved with BA community.

Secondly, every business analyst needs to have basic understanding of the technology landscape. We have seen tremendous growth in technology in the last decade.
