What do you do if your boss's expectations are unrealistic?

Un buen #jefe o #jefa debe ser capaz de escuchar y de pedir feedback y generar un clima donde las personas de su equipo puedan darle su opinión. Si las expectativas no son realistas, en un clima laboral adecuado, las personas trabajadoras se ven con la confianza suficiente de poder mostrar su opinión y exponer las razones por las que consideran que las expectativas no son realistas. Y en todo caso, si estamos hablando de unas expectativas y/o exigencias abusivas, en una empresa con un buen departamento de personas (#RRHH), los empleados deberían poder escalar el tema a #RRHH sin miedo a sufrir represalias.

If my boss's expectations are unrealistic, I would initiate a constructive dialogue to discuss the feasibility of the expectations and provide evidence-based insights into potential challenges or limitations. I would aim to align expectations with available resources, timelines, and project constraints, offering alternative solutions or compromises where necessary. Additionally, I would emphasize the importance of setting achievable goals to ensure the success of projects and maintain a positive working relationship built on trust and transparency.

Someone said "feedforward instead of feedback" . Get to understand the boss' expectations and also get him to understand what you can deliver in a specific period.

If your boss expects too much from you, it is important to sort out what's most important. Have a word with your boss about what can actually be done and what might be too much. By being open and sharing your thoughts, you can find a way to meet expectations that work for both of you. It is like figuring out the best plan together, so you can do your job well without feeling overwhelmed.

Communication is the solution to most problems. After clearly understanding your boss's expectations and the resources available at your end , there are 5 important steps 1. Identify the reason for the gaps happening between his expectations and your delivery 2. Try to view the entire situation from his perspective to avoid any bias 3. Communicate your concerns, your limitations ,your boundaries and your intentions to your boss assertively 4. Look to find a middle ground where his expectations are fulfilled, KPI's are met and your boundaries are also respected and maintained 5. Use tools like UI matrix, pomodoro, to-do lists, delegation, etc to organize your day better, prioritise tasks efficiently and maintain work life balance

This is a very common issue faced by all , but there are many ways to handle such situations in a positive way - Do one to one basis meeting with your boss to make him understand your present workload & approximately the time u spend on each task. Also talk with Him with your report card which means data , figures, numbers of your achievements which proves that u r already doing more then expected. Let this talk be open about doing / taking more task but you will need more hands & team to take more responsibility & give results . Sometimes it happens that boss likes your working pattern and he wants to give more work to u , but if u r not open about the constraints and your limitations + solutions then it becomes dicy.

Boss is academic administrator and connected with trust, Government, university, naac, society, students, parents, staff. He/ she has to balance among all. Sometimes they may not come to other's expectations. But his decisions never be unrealistic, as he has faith in potential of staff. If standards are set abnormally high then he should be convinced. People should not go with the problem and get solutions from chair. One should also have approach with possible ways and outcome along with issues. But since he is sitting in chair he must be respected and not to be underestimated.

Remember that limits and boundaries are always more productive in the long term. If the expectations are unrealistic, you will most likely burn out before you even have a chance of meeting them. If that happens, you will have to spend time recovering and it may have a bigger impact on your career than you think.
