Senior managers want to see the benefit of any new approach, so focus on the improved customer satisfaction, increased sales, better feedback etc. tie the UX back to tangible business benefits that senior management will understand. You need to talk their language.

I often had this issue, not with a boss, but with a department, who struggled to understand the need for creativity. My strategy to combat this was to provide 2 options of a design. The first was over designed, with lots of creativity, visual interactions and complex functionality. All of this wasn't useless design, it was a perfectly idealized design for the given task if we had no constraints. I would present this first and let the department tear it down. Then I would offer a more approachable, less detailed design as an alternative. This was more suitable to the constraints we had. As it was compared to the complex over designed version, the department was more inclined to accept the design decisions in the moderate version.
