What do you do if your boss is not responsive to your communication efforts?

It can be pretty annoying when your boss doesn't respond to your messages. I get it - it's like you're not being heard. But, instead of getting frustrated, why not try a different approach? You could have a quick chat with them or send an email, depending on how they like to communicate. I had adoped 2-3 formulas when i get stuck in that: 1. Normally, i would messege her for the time and give her the brief about the topic which we would be discussing. 2. Usually I would aske her something but also provide a set of solutions that could be applied in a given situation. 3. If the project is stuck and not gets moving; i would tell her what all probable options i had tried and implied. 4. I used to tell her that this is the timeframe within which i have to finalise this; otherwise we may get delayed. I think these things work.

I guess I'd start by being self-reflective: How am I communicating? What is my style like? What is my tonality like? What is my pace and rate of speaking or communicating like? And what am I sharing/communicating majority of the time? Perhaps by unpacking some of this you might uncover some areas of opportunity to level of your communications. Then I'd assess what factors might contribute to the lack of responsiveness that are out of your control.

It is always good to make sure the way you convey your message and the purpose of your message. Your tone is also something which plays a very important role while conveying your message. You may also outline some suggestions which you think might bring benefit to the product or bussiness.

I agree but with me l have used WhatsApp and his response has been faster. Seeing most bosses pretend to be busy but the hurdle with me has been that my immediate supervisor has always been a blockage. It’s usually curtious to talk to the immediate supervisor and when no action is taken l usually WhatsApp my boss. I have found this to be an effective way in getting a quick response.

This is the common issue in any corporate culture but you have to ability to tackle those things very wisely. I will set a meeting and ask about the concern he has to me and I will try to resolve those as much as I can.

I always tend to use a problem statement approach. Such as X has been causing a problem, impacting Y & Z, I explored options of A, B & C, but they didn't achieve the desired result, what would you do different to what I do? This way, you have completed everything you know, so it's time for your boss to pull some strings or make you aware of option D for example that was there, but you got involved in so much detail you oversaw it.

The first thing would be a follow up email where you apologize for floating it to the top of their inbox, but just let them know that this is important to you. If you are working in person in their office, then swing by and let them know you'd like to set up a time to talk, and if they have an assistant, you can work with that person. If all else fails, you can write them a handwritten note and slip it on their desk. That's bound to get their attention. Following up with the managers and the superiors is a skill. Yes, sometimes they choose not to respond for some reasons. Also, they may miss out the messages but copying people is always a great way to make sure others are also aware of the situation.

Always make the text of your request professional and polite even though much of the correspondence is never read by the person that it is addressed to. I feel one should patiently wait if the matter isn't urgent because of timing, social setting, availablity, family emergency etc. Or any of the factors, the boss may not respond at that time. However, if the matter is urgent follow up with a call and if up to 2 times calls are not answered. Don't call again. There might be things more important than your concern at that time. You did your best.

I’ve found having an agreed upon content review system is helpful, and can alleviate this situation. For example, a shared folder to deposit assets for review and a specific schedule (according to my supervisor’s availability) where they’ll assess and move assets to an “approved” or “needs revision” folder. This way, it keeps the process moving and everyone knows what to expect to happen and when.

I will respect their schedule and try to find a convenient time to communicate. Politely ask for feedback on my communication approach to understand if there are any improvements i can make. If appropriate, seek assistance or advice from colleagues who may have a better rapport with my boss or insights into effective communication strategies. If this persists, i should also be persistent and if traditional communication methods aren't working, I'll consider reaching out through alternative channels such as a designated. Regardless of the situation, I'll maintain a professional demeanour and continue to fulfil my responsibilities to the best of my ability while seeking resolution to the communication issue.

It is also worth having an open conversation about it. Instead of guessing which is the best channel, timing and length of the message, ask your boss about it and then act accordingly. You may agree areas in which you will be empowered to act without further consultations which might speed things out. You might also agree a channel for solving issues which are super urgent and that might work as long as you do not overuse it.

Do something "out of the blue" but definitely not weird to get her/his attention. Sometimes adding a simple post-it of appointment time on their laptop or tablet can win their attention and also the fact that you are serious about what you want to communicate. While communicating, be direct and leave time for discussion.
