What do you do if your boss is resistant to supporting your ideas or initiatives?

It has a name ..'Not Invented Here', when Bosses et al won't listen to good 'new' ideas. If it's a cultural thing about the biz being resistant to change .. it may be time to deploy your skills elsewhere. If it's a busy-ness thing [no time to listen] you might suggest that new ideas are reviewed at an end of month progress meeting. (If there isn't one of these .. there's the 1st good idea to get implemented) If you still get the 'Deaf Ear' as we call it ..seriously it may be time to find somewhere that matches your core values. Not everyone will always agree with our ideas or initiatives. As such, we must open to understanding what their concerns are. In the workplace, we must be willing to receive and synthesize the concerns expressed by your manager. Our boss actually may have valid concerns, things that we may not have thought of.

Ones understanding can play a great role in hindering the acceptance of an idea. This may be due to reluctance, and also nature of a person to perceive the message delivered by another person. It happens that a staff has very fruitful ideas, reached the bosses office to share but just because this boss has no attentive skills and possibly very familiar to the staff, don't give an attentive listening to the idea. This may take years until the same idea is taken into practice after the boss receives same suggestion from another trusted person

The feedback we receive from our boss regarding our ideas or initiatives can provide valuable insight into how our ideas could be strengthened or adjusted. Therefore, we must be objective when understanding the concerns and comments made in order for us to improve upon our initiatives.

Objectivity, as mentioned by my colleague Erwin Jack, is an important aspect of the refining process. Being clear as to what a good idea looks like to who. Just because we are fans of our ideas does not make them great ideas. Simply because our boss does not support an idea does make the idea bad. Gaining feedback and evaluating objectively helps to refine reality, which in turn molds our proposals. Risk, timing, viewing lens, market conditions, and agendas all play into how even the best of ideas will be received. Sometimes the clarity gained helps us adjust less about the idea and more about the approach!

Using feedback is a great way to refining your ideas. If the idea you presented wasn't proceeded, feedback is a next step to understanding how your idea can be refined to suit the certain project. An idea can work for a certain project you work on, however, you may see different results for a project in a different sector or with a different budget. Hence, ensuring that you tailor your ideas to the specific project you work on is essential, and will showcase that you have related your idea to the specific goal that is in place.

As a lone person, it can be more difficult to get new ideas up and running. We should find support from our colleagues and others, which can add to the attractiveness of our ideas with the support garnered.

The key to success in this type of effort is what I call using influence with integrity. The only way to get your way, assuming it is a wise directiojn for your organizaiton, is to get your superior to see your idea as helping them achieve something they need, whether it be increased support for them or reduced pressure on them.

Building support is essential. By using rational thought in your projects, and putting forward a suggestion with proven results is a great way to move forward with an idea. If the idea has been successful and has proven to be valuable, and impactful to work, it would be an idea you can put forward which will give you more credibility. Also, producing a case study for your idea is a great way to showcase how your idea worked out in a real project. Not only will this show initiative, but provide insights and trust that your idea will be a catalyst to seeing results that will work and will produce results that meet benchmarks and KPIs.

No one is an island so before re-approaching your boss, seek the backing of colleagues and other stakeholders. Demonstrating wider support within the organization can help sway decision-making in your favor. There is unity in numbers.

We want to make sure that our ideas are clear as to how they will benefit the organization and the people working therein. Our manager will better understand the purpose of our ideas and what positive impacts it can have. Thus, we are building the credibility and need for our ideas to our boss who will likely take our ideas more seriously as a result.

When you're clear with your proposition, while re-iterating the benefits,you stand the chance to gain buy-in. Sometimes multiple meetings might be had to showcase how your proposition can lead to increased efficiency, a streamlined process and ultimately meet the business goal.

Do not let the design shadow the core of your messaging. Clearly outline how your initiative will benefit the organization, focusing on improvements in efficiency, profitability, or competitive edge. Make the advantages clear and compelling.

If our boss still has some reservations regarding our ideas, we should seek support for a trail run or a small scale version to start off with. This would give an opportunity to see some results which may cause our boss to realize the benefits of our ideas and possibly give full approval.

A pilot is a great way to test, optimise and experiment different strategies that you can potentially use for bigger projects. A pilot is a great way to implement the foundations of your idea, and see the results whilst minimising the risk. Not only will you minimise the risks, but also gather valuable insights and learnings in what strategies, optimisations and actions will work and produce strong results. This will produce valuable data for clients, internally as well as for future projects. For instance, if your main finding from the pilot was that the strategy used was highly cost efficient, this finding and learning could be used for a bigger project, which could be a basis for a new strategy and way of working.

Answer their questions in advance. Show them to let visualize it and to reduce perceived risks, propose a pilot project. This allows your idea to be tested on a smaller scale, which can help gather concrete data to support its effectiveness.

I’ve been in this position. Boss “buy-in” is critical. Getting him or her to accept the idea of innovation (and the risks that come from efforts associated with these efforts) would be a win. That said, the real difficulty will be the staff and subordinates.

One of the best ways to engender support is to find something of personal interest to your superior that is not related to your request (or proposal) and link your desires to their personal interests, e.g., sports, liquor, cigars, clothing, etc. Touch your decision maker with emotion, not logic, find a way to get to them through a connection with their interests, THEN show how the organization may benefit as well. This gives them a win, win - benfit for themselves and benefit for the organizaiton.

In the course of my career, one thing I have learned is not to impose my ideas on people, but rather to present them in a way that elicits interest. In this case, I will first try to understand the reason why the boss is not at ease with the idea or initiative. If the concerns are germane then we can reason together as a team and move on. Otherwise, if I feel I have a strong case and there are gaps in the idea, I will review the initiative, refine the proposal and try to make a more detail presentation of the idea to my boss, pointing out organizational benefits. I can also build interdepartmental supports to sell the idea. If after this presentation I still do not get a nod from my boss, I will put the idea aside for future application.
