What do you do if your boss doesn't understand your career goals and aspirations?

You to first understand and lay down your personal plans for the 3years, 5 years & 10 years and accordingly work towards achieving them. 2. The personal aspirations plan can only be fulfilled, if your plans are clear & the only you will be able to take your company to that level. 3. If the company achieves its level, automatically your personal goals will be achieved.

If your boss doesn't understand your goals you might not be preforming like you should be. Preform at the highest level you can, if you have goals to move up in a company show them you will work harder than anyone else and take on more responsibilities. You may have goals but do you deserve to get to your goal, show you boss that you are.

You need some honesty and clarity here and fairly quickly I would suggest. You also need a hard reality check to doubly ensure you are in the right place and the role you are in offers the potential to deliver what you are seeking.

Have an open and honest conversation with your boss. Be clear and realistic about your plan. Every bosses job is to help you get there and offer training/coaching environment to get there. Periodic one on one conversations will help as both of you can set/discuss next steps and measure progress. Your boss should not receive this as a threat even if your ultimate goal is to replace him/her one day.
