One of the most common mistakes that I see young people make is to set specific goals that get them locked into a specific vision -- and it effectively puts blinders on, where when opportunities that are outside of that narrow vision are either never seen, or are seen but discarded. There's a very delicate balance to be maintained. You don't want to be CONSTANTLY jumping from one thing to another; but you DO want to be open to new opportunities as they arise.

If you are just starting out, I'd say that rather than trying to focus TOO MUCH on one specific direction, you should be seeking as many DIFFERENT opportunities as possible. NOW IS THE TIME to experiment, to try new things, to gain a broad perspective. As you get older, it becomes more and more difficult to do this. It is VERY unlikely that you will have a full grasp of what kind of job TRULY suits you. A job that will not only match your interests, but also your skills, your desires, etc. So get out there. Be INTENTIONAL in choosing DIFFERENT directions. EXPERIMENT. Take RISKS. There is absolutely NO BETTER TIME IN YOUR LIFE to do this than right now. Even failures will help you make better decisions, and choose better directions.

ALL of them finish their assigned tasks, complete their duties, etc. But two of them GO ABOVE AND BEYOND...they make an extra effort, they do MORE than expected. Who do you think is going to get promoted? Who do you think is gaining MORE work experience? Or get a better reference?

"Reflect regularly" is rather obvious, and generic advice. WHAT should you reflect on? Let's say that we have two people. Each is assigned to find the 'best tasting coffee'. The first one drinks two different kinds; the second drinks twenty different kinds. Then they BOTH REFLECT on their experiences, and choose which is the best coffee. BOTH are sincere, BOTH reflect regularly and extensively. Yet for obvious reasons, the second person is FAR MORE LIKELY to find the 'best tasting coffee' than the first. Same thing with your work experience. The more DIFFERENT kinds of experiences you have, the more EFFECTIVE your "reflection" is going to be. Whereas if you have very limited experiences, reflecting on them is likely to be less effective.

Ask for self assessments, mentorship, and feedback. Also take feedback objectively. Never take feedback personally, it's given to help you improve and grow as a entrepreneur and a person. You're ability to take that feedback constructively will determine your success along with being able to adjust your persona and strategy to meet needs. Let me tell you what I HATE. I HATE when I go to a networking event, and a bunch of people just run around handing out business cards, barely taking 3-5 minutes to talk to anyone. That's NOT "networking". Nor is contacting someone on LinkedIn, trying to get a job, or sell them something, without first forming some sort of connection. Find out which LinkedIn groups they are members of, then join those groups. If they comment on topics in those groups, or if they make posts of their own, comment on them...preferably referencing them directly, so you get their attention. AFTER you've been engaging with them for awhile like this, THEN contact them, you're far more likely to have a positive response. Same principle holds everywhere.
