What do you do if you want to switch career fields and need help with technological innovation?

Many innovations emerge from the convergence of diverse fields, so broaden your knowledge base beyond traditional tech domains.

Start by assessing your skills and interests: Evaluate your existing skills, knowledge, and interests to identify possible areas that align with a desired field. With this knowledge, there will be more clarity on what is the additional skill that needs to be acquired, and to be able to stay focus on it, knowing it will lead to your desied outcome.

Supplement your formal education with practical application by working on real-world projects or experiments. This can deepen your understanding and showcase your abilities.

The tech industry thrives on continuous learning. According to the World Economic Forum, a whopping 50% of employees will need reskilling by 2025 [Source: World Economic Forum]. Luckily, there's a treasure trove of online resources: platforms like Coursera and edX offer fantastic courses, often at a fraction of the traditional degree cost. Plus, countless free tutorials and bootcamps are just a Google search away!

The landscape of technology is constantly evolving, so commit to lifelong learning to stay relevant. Subscribe to industry newsletters, follow thought leaders on social media, and enroll in online courses or webinars to keep abreast of the latest developments in emerging technologies.

Network: attend industry events, and/or join professional associations, connect with professionals on social media platforms to expand your network. If possible, seek mentorship from experienced individuals in your desired field who can provide guidance and insights.

Tech is a collaborative field. Networking is your secret weapon! Join online communities like LinkedIn groups or industry-specific forums. Connect with professionals on LinkedIn – you might be surprised how willing people are to share their knowledge and experiences.

I'm very much for the idea of exploring freelancing opportunities, as this can provide practical hands-on experience, allow on to build a portfolio, or at least to build more experience in field you otherwise may not have as much opportunity to explore currently. With this, after gathering a period of exposure in the field, it could much moe easily lead to employment in this new/different field, and/or industry.

There's no substitute for practical experience. Look for freelance gigs on platforms like Upwork or Fiverr. Volunteer your tech skills to a non-profit. Even personal projects can showcase your abilities. Every line of code you write takes you closer to your dream job!

Phone a friend or colleague that you trust and appreciate their skills. I once worked with a person who had a great idea and understanding of the needs of public safety 911 operators. She is not technical but knows the problem space and has a lot of experience and empathy for the people who take the calls. Together with another outstanding engineer, myself, and our colleague we created a system and patent that solves a critical set of problems. I learned a lot and so did my colleagues. Don’t be shy, partner with people outside your direct skills area and you will likely find most people happy and excited to collaborate.
