Fix it in Prep -- Academy Award-winning director, Mike van Diem, on using FrameForge Studio, the Emmy Winning Previs Software, on THE SURPRISE. "The most complex, challenging and most expensive sequence involved a runaway truck on a steep city hill, dodging traffic and passing 11 street crossings. With just 2 days on a hill with the desired architecture and steepness but only two crossings, we needed some serious CGI to extend it. To avoid 'surprises', I built a city set with all 11 crossings as a 3D Model, then used FrameForge to create a full, shot by shot, moving storyboard of the entire sequence, giving everyone involved the exact info they needed. It worked like a charm, we wrapped the sequence on time, thanks to FrameForge."

The biggest issue in film production from an inefficiency / time wasted / money overspent standpoint is really simple: bad communication. This is a top-down problem; if the E.P. doesn't prioritize making sure every member of their team is at the table when decisions are being made, the entire production will suffer from poor planning, and the pain will ripple all the way into post, who will feel it most acutely. "Fix it in Post" really means "I'm too lazy to problem solve now for something that will cost me a lot more time and money later." Your lead editor should be involved in all the pre-production meetings and decisions, right from the start.

Once you start accumulating footage, organization is crucial. Create a system for naming and storing files that makes sense for your project. Use descriptive file names and organize clips into folders based on scenes, takes, or days of shooting. This will save you from a headache when you're trying to find that perfect shot later on. I always suggest non-destructive editing as a basic mantra as an editor. By which I mean, I know as an editor you know how to flesh out the best take and show the best to your clients. Always have RC & FC bins ( rough cut & final cut). When you start ur edit u will with rc01, your cut..by the time you are happy with every session it should be non destructively versioned up as rc02 so on so forth. Once you have shown to ur director it wil be fc01..like wise so on so forth. Take ur call when u want to version up. Whenever a end client is unhappy about something what I always do is ill pick the 3 or 5 different takes from my fcs and rcs and send them for closure. Most of the time they end up liking one of them or the one in edit.

Ever since the pandemic, the desire to work remotely when it comes to reviews has changed the way reviews work. But all it has really done is introduce more pain points for miscommunication. FrameIO is not a replacement for in-person reviews. It's fine as a first step, but going back and forth in this manner is a complete waste of time: "try this!" Editor tries it. It doesn't work. They post the cut. Producer sees it doesn't work. Repeat cycle ad nauseam. Or, the editor can see that it doesn't work, so they do something that does work, but the producer wants to see their suggestion anyway, so the editor is posting multiple cuts... all of which wastes time. One solid day of reviews and edits in person saves you time, money, and frustration.
