In sales, your network is your net worth. Everyone you'll ever meet knows something you don't. So as an intern spend time with your mentors and clients. Spend time knowing their work and challenges and offer your help whenever possible. This act grooms your relationship with another person. Which leads to building strong relations personally and professionally.

As an intern, I always recommend spending time with the entire team, if possible, shadowing various sales meetings and accompanying the team as much as possible, including managers. This helps to better understand the profession and, most importantly, build the foundations of our own sales technique

In sales, you meet different people, in different places at different times to handle different situations. Whether they are your seniors, juniors, client or customer's. All these demand a different you everytime to handle versatile situations. So, Adaptability is the key to become a great sales person.

Learn basic software's used in sales. Advance excel, Power Point, AI for data analyzing and making reports. These will help you design strategies and make efficient decisions in sales. Learn the software used by your own company. These are tools to know the past record, and take better and efficient decisions in present and for future.

Don't wait for someone to tell you what to do. Look for ways to add genuine value beyond your assigned tasks. Maybe it's researching new sales tools, creating compelling sales presentations, or helping a struggling salesperson perfect their pitch. Take initiative, but be sure your extra effort aligns with the team's goal. Position yourself as a valuable resource for the sales team, helping them tailor their approach for maximum impact

To stand out - in as much as you work very hard also work smart. Prioritisation and put efforts in 20% of work that will give you 80% results. Be visible and assertive during meetings.- Seek for clarity and feedback to enhance your work. Take responsibility and ownership of business goals..

Recently I had the opportunity to create a sales talent program for introducing recent graduates to sales in freight forwarding. The program was a 12 months paid program, but selected candidates could have been considered as interns. While learning, showing initiative and exceeding expectations are all important points what is key for me is the ability to follow the program as it was designed while building a relationship with the management. As an intern showing the ability to follow and execute instructions is a first, in doing so the intern should build a relationship with the management team which should lead to additional tasks and responsibilities ultimately resulting in exceeding the original expectations.

As a sales intern, keep your mind open to accumulate as much knowledge and wisdom you can from seniors. Its good to evaluate and understand what the speak and how it gets implemented. Be high on energy, understand the art of prospecting, sales pitches, minutes of the meeting, follow ups, closures, implementation, post sales activities, etc. Doing all of the above could become the best investment for a sales intern in building a sales career.
