What do you do if you want to stand out as a marketing intern?

The top three hard skills I tell anyone looking to get into marketing : 1) Be Obsessed with the Clients story. Constantly be talking to and about the customers. 2)Direct Response Copywriting. No matter what happens, this skill will be needed. 3)Interviewing others. If you can interview others well, and really listen, you'll learn so much and it will inform your copywriting.

Before even diving into the tasks of your internship, identify what it is you are seeking to gain from the experience. As an intern, you have a limited time with the company sponsoring you, so you want to approach this opportunity strategically with your goals and a list of the key contacts you'd like to gain in mind. Once you've established your goals, don't be afraid to ask for what you want!

I am always impressed when an intern comes to work in our office and they have researched us - checked out our social media, skimmed through our website, liked our pages, etc. It is that little extra touch that shows they really care about the opportunity.

Regardless of the position, it is important to familiarise yourself with the basics. It can also often be helpful to familiarise yourself with previous projects, the website or the CSR in order to find out about the company, its activities and direction. Especially as an outsider, you often have a different perspective on existing problems. However, you also need the right circumstances - an environment that allows you to get involved as an intern.

To stand out as a marketing intern, you should proactively seek opportunities to contribute, demonstrate creativity and initiative, ask for feedback and act on it, collaborate effectively with team members, and continuously learn and stay updated on industry trends.

Proactivity and initiative are prime qualities that will serve you well in your internship and beyond. Many of my intern opportunities converted into full-time job offers because I remained relentlessly curious. Not only did I continuously offer to help members of my team on a daily basis, I also would ask to sit in on meetings or on calls to learn about the more senior functions of what my team did and the methods they used to get their jobs done. Showing your readiness for the full-time role will inevitably help you stand out as a star intern.

Be proactive, but not for the sake of doing "things" - be proactive in asking questions, in suggesting new areas for exploration and in what else you could be doing to help..

Being eager and interested in problems and tasks is a great approach. However, you should also be careful not to overestimate your qualifications and use them correctly. Despite all your eagerness, you should also conscientiously complete the tasks assigned to you before taking on new ones.

Being passionately curious is one of most important skills, not just ask questions but seek answers, contribute and make an impact. The current generation is equipped with all they need to excel hence age, experience and other barriers are not as prevalent as before.

Your passions should be forefront and apparent. Don't be shy to ask for connections to other job functions or departments. Shadowing and informational opportunities outside of your day-to-day internships are also great ways to network and learn more about various roles. This relentless curiosity will serve you well in building your relationships and your expertise.

Utilize your organizations resources AND some unconventional ones too in your search for insights and information. (Literally) build an excel sheet of logins and passwords to databases, trade publications, and news outlets But also utilize the sources that are true to your life experience and expertise -- you might be the only one who checks Reddit or Twitter for how people are talking / feeling / reviewing a certain brand - and that's powerful!

As an intern, you have the great opportunity to get a taste of as many areas of responsibility as possible without having to make any major commitments. Not only do you gain valuable experience, but you can also find out which areas suit you and which do not.

When you hear someone talking about ‘old school’ or ‘new school,’ that’s a sure sign they are not learners. Align yourself with the people who are deeply curious about what works, not what’s fashionable or the default solution that everybody else uses. Being curious is about unexpected discovery, about finding things others miss. That is how you stand out.

To shine as a marketing intern, take charge by looking for ways to help out beyond your usual duties. Keep learning, share creative ideas, and ask for feedback to get better. Be dependable, meet deadlines, and stay positive. Connect with your coworkers and people in the industry for future job openings. Stay flexible and act professionally at all times. By doing these things, you'll impress your team and bosses.

Professionalism is imperative in the workplace. Even if your company has a more relaxed culture, you still need to show up as your best self, prepared, neatly dressed and respectful. In marketing and media roles especially, it is key to forge relationships. One's reputation will often precede them, you want to ensure that when folks bring your name up in a room there are only positive things to say.

Be kind! Soft skills, soft skills, soft skills! I don't know what it means to "be professional" but I definitely know what kinds of people I prefer to spend time around. Don't worry about sounding smart, worry about having an informed POV. Don't worry about what you're wearing, worry about how you make others feel. Don't worry about what school you went to, worry about what skills / courses / trainings you're learning right now.

These values not only apply to marketing interns, but should generally be observed in any (professional) environment and when dealing with people. Colleagues should be treated as you would like to be treated yourself.

Take ownership, look beyond the assigned task. Most often interns only do what they are told to do. Taking ownership and showing that you get the big picture is important

To truly stand out to company leaders, show your unstoppable work ethic, especially in an area that is a pain point to upper management. Discover what that is, and show your willingness to work harder than everyone else, and your vision to identify pain points and do something about them. That is the sort of initiative that all managers look for in their team.

Keeping track of your contributions is important as you build your resume. You want to have proof points to your work, especially if you go above and beyond or have a key role on an impactful project.
