What do you do if you want to showcase your expertise in environmental impact assessment during an interview?

To further demonstrate expertise in environmental impact assessment during an interview, highlight problem-solving skills, stakeholder engagement, project management proficiency, regulatory compliance knowledge, risk assessment expertise, effective communication abilities, and dedication to continuous improvement.

During the interview, highlight specific projects or experiences where you conducted environmental impact assessments (EIAs), emphasizing your role in assessing potential environmental consequences and proposing mitigation measures. Discuss your proficiency in relevant regulations and methodologies, showcasing your ability to identify and address environmental risks effectively. Additionally, demonstrate your problem-solving skills by discussing how you navigated challenges or complexities during past assessments. Finally, articulate your passion for environmental stewardship and your commitment to ensuring sustainable practices in all your endeavors.

Highlight specific projects where you conducted comprehensive environmental impact assessments, detailing methodologies used and key findings. Discuss your ability to identify potential environmental risks and propose mitigation measures. Showcase your proficiency in relevant regulations and standards, emphasizing compliance and best practices. Provide examples of how your assessments have influenced decision-making and contributed to sustainable outcomes. Demonstrate your communication skills by effectively conveying complex environmental concepts to diverse stakeholders. Be prepared to discuss challenges encountered and how you overcame them, demonstrating adaptability and problem-solving capabilities.

The first thing to do is to answer the question “Why EIA”, how did it come to being? Justifications for EIA. Then I dwell into the process of conducting EIA through to getting certification or Environmental Impact Statement. I will give an overview of the guiding stipulated format of writing EIA report and briefly give descriptions on the components of each chapter. However, it is worthy to note that EIA project is not a one-man job, but involves group of experts from diverse fields. To proceed to other sections will depend on the capacity of the individual in the EIA project. As a project manager, then it’s a yes to proceed.

The first step will be to demonstrate my understanding of the subject matter vis a vis what is EIA, why EIA, how is it carried out and for what reason? Who are the professionals required and what is the outcome of the EIA project. At its basic, EIA is a decision enabler, it enables stakeholders of an intended development understand the benefits and risks due to an intended project and if it is best to proceed with. Key terminology to note are 1)Scoping, which involves exploring the various aspects of the project to identify potential impacts (positive or negative) 2) Screening - Here the impacts identified are screened based on impact significance usually a function of likelihood to occur and consequences severity.

My Knowledge of EIA has come handy in the course of my job- where EIA is mandatory for certain development projects like Drilling and Seismic Aquisition. My participation was helpful in securing requisite government approval to enable project commencement.

Tools and techniques used are specific to experts, who carry out studies on one or more environmental components as approved in the Terms of Reference. This is the most critical aspect as a project manager. You must have good technical knowledge of all environmental components, what they entail and how to interpret respective data results. Therefore, relevant qualifications, experience and on the job training are essential. You must know when to reject a consultant’s report not exhaustive enough. A brief on materials and methods used for data collection and results analyses will be given as relevant to each environmental component.

For a recent interview, I used examples of various software tools including Enablon to show how my team and I performed an impact assessment for my Everett, WA site. I was able to show how we broke the project down into phases and addressed multiple concerns related to stormwater runoff and construction equipment issues.

I will demonstrate my communication skills following project management life cycle model from project initiation through to completion.
