What do you do if you want to save time as a writer?

In order to avoid procrastination, I always set deadlines. I plan ahead and organise all my materials so that it's easy for me to have a structure while I write. It's also good to track the time so that it becomes easy to make adjustments to be more productive.

My writing is always most efficient when I do my due diligence when it comes to research. Being confident in my knowledge base allows me to be more confident in my writing which leads to fewer revisions and more high-quality drafts.

Planning is vital. Not just with the writing itself but also with time management. I always take my deadline into account, plus other projects and distractions, then schedule the work in easy to achieve blocks. And when they are achieved and often exceeded, it's encouraging. I also plan the night before what I'll be doing the next day so I can get up and hit the ground running.

Always plan ahead when it comes to writing. Have a rough blueprint about your material and how it would be presented to the readers. Have that rough order of key topics that you will write and the way they will be arranged in an order of your choice. Your words, techniques, and literary devices can also be planned ahead. You can always plan your quality of writing. How complex the sentences and grammar would be and which different range of words would be used by you.

I actually don't find time blocks that helpful. Writers are slightly superstitious creatures and if you let us, we will spend hours creating the perfect writing environment and perfect time to write – and fail to do any writing. Setting aside a block of time just leads to disappointment when it inevitably gets interrupted. Just sit down and write. Do it whenever. Do it on your phone on the train. Do it for 15 minutes before bed. Just do it!

I use a Pomodoro timer whenever I want to increase productivity. There are many apps and online versions. It segments your time into 25 minutes of work, followed by a 5-minute break. There are usually 3 cycles like that, then a longer break of 20 - 25 minutes. It's one of those things that sounds like it won't help, but it does. I find traditional time blocking does not work for me. I like a more flexible schedule, so I set a daily theme and then use a Pomodoro to get things accomplished.

I believe in write first and edit later. Improving in your writing means accepting imperfections. So continue to put your thoughts down and let your creativity flows freely. Don't bother about writing a master piece . Improvement in writing is a gradual process. You can always edit later on, thereby helping you to control your time as against wasting it.

This is my approach for quick drafts. So whenever I have a good idea about my Novel, I try to write a small 1-2 page of short summary. This summary contains the whole idea and story which has been compressed. Now, I take this small idea and convert it into something big through my creativity and time. This way, I don't spend hours thinking and writing simultaneously. Ideas can come & go and we must pen them down instantly. Any delays lead to further delay in your writing process.

Keyboard shortcuts are a blessing for all writing folks. Many times we need to give pop culture references and special quotes from famous characters & personalities. We need to preserve the words and order of such quotes and therefore must mention them properly. Copy-pasting such information is easy and simple. Similarly, sometimes you may need to copy your previous work from different platforms and integrate it with your current writing software. Copy-pasting again helps in doing such tedious task. CTRL+B is Excellent for converting your words into Bold Format CTRL+ I makes your words Italic which is excellent for some special lines. CTRL+A allows you to select the entire writing material and can be copied anywhere else.

Learning keyboard shortcuts can save you a lot of time. Get to know shortcuts for common actions like copy (Ctrl+C or Cmd+C), paste (Ctrl+V or Cmd+V), find (Ctrl+F or Cmd+F), and save (Ctrl+S or Cmd+S). Using these shortcuts helps you avoid using the mouse to go through menus, making your writing faster and keeping your workflow smooth.

Voice typing is a very good and time saving software which is pretty similar to the dictation technique. So you simply dictate your words and sentences to the software and the same gets typed automatically. One very important tip is to use a good Mic as this makes your voice better which allows the software to properly understand and type complicated words and phrases. Do cross check your final output for grammatical and structural errors.

Use voice typing to speed up your writing. Speaking your content can be faster than typing. Most word processors have a voice typing feature that turns your speech into text. It might take a little practice to get used to it, but once you do, it can really quicken your content creation.

Do make sure to eliminate repetitive words and phrases which are not great for a particular context. Do make sure to replace words which might be confusing. Editing tools can also help you in suggesting better words that makes your writing more concise and appealing.

When I really am running out of time to finish a writing project, I sometimes contact someone who can help with it. Depending on which aspects I need help, it may be my writer friend, my junior who wishes to learn, or my professors. If you make multiple people work on one project's different aspects, please remember to make sure to double-check if the work has been done to your satisfaction.
