Some basic training in Occupational Safety and Health need to understand the fundamentals of it which includes the Hazard Identification Risk Assessment and Control, how to do a Occupational Safety and Health Program, how to do a OSH Reports and submission to the regulatory agency, emergency preparedness and response, incident and accident investigation, safety and health inspection, OSH legislation and etc.

Most companies have people identified or groups to participate in for workplace safety. Get involved with trainings for such things as First Aid/CPR/AED, Defensive Driving, site programs or company-specific safety observations. Look into the process for near misses or observations and start there. Some companies provide opportunities to create content for Safety Bites or Safety Skills, or department specific concerns. Consider cross-training in other departments to gain better understanding of processes and potential hazards (and safety procedures in place). Then as you move through certification or formal training you will have a broader base and relevant incident-specific experience to draw from.
