Coming from a data scientist: a portfolio is a little bit overrated. I would say it's a nice-to-have, but not a must-have. It really depends on what your goals are though. If you would like to work as a freelancer and don't have a lot of prior professional working experience, having a portfolio of some personal projects could be very useful. However, if you would like to be employed at a company, previous professional experience is often valued more highly. When applying for jobs, I've hardly experienced companies asking for my portfolio, let alone discuss it in detail.
