I personally think the best platform is being part of the local startup community. Attend your local Startup Grind chapter or 1 Million Cups. If there isn't one, start one. I started the Startup Grind chapter in Sacramento. By it's nature, I became connected to all the resources within our community. Many startup founders would come to me for advice. I've become an informal mentor to a lot of startups. Occasionally, I would asked to be a formal advisor. In one case, a startup founder recruited me to be their full time CTO. I'm happy to say that I helped build that startup to $4 M in ARR in two years and a successful exit.

Safe harbors - In my experience, cultivating a space where mistakes are shared openly can lead to transformative growth. Do emphasize confidentiality and encourage candid feedback from day one, making it clear that this is about learning, not criticism. Sharing my own missteps, and how I navigated through them, has opened up deeper discussions and mutual respect. This approach helps mentees feel supported in their vulnerabilities. Listen to understand, not to respond - Early in my career, I was all about solutions. It took me a while to realize that sometimes, mentees just need a sounding board. I learned to listen, really listen, without immediately jumping in with advice. It's about understanding their perspective, challenges, and feelings. In my experience, this approach not only builds trust but also empowers them to find their solutions, with you as a supportive guide.

Encourage mentees to take initiative in their learning journey by asking questions and seeking feedback actively. Foster a growth mindset by celebrating progress and embracing setbacks as opportunities for learning and improvement. Provide constructive criticism with empathy and encouragement, focusing on areas for development while highlighting strengths. Have a Mentor. Be a Mentor. Most entrepreneurs lack a dedicated approach to professional development. One of the most effective forms of professional development is mentorship. A mentor is a professional on the same path as the mentee but is further down the path. Every entrepreneur should have a mentor and should be a mentor. At any given point on the path, you're both a learner and a teacher. You learn from and teach your mentor. You learn from and teach your mentee. The more I learn, the more I learn that there's more to learn. Your experience is the backbone of your knowledge. However, technology increases at break neck speeds surpassing even Mohr's law. Make learning part of your routine. I daily go through courses on Coursera and I educate myself by watching YouTube videos of topics of interest.

Open up to the fact that any life that is not your own life can teach you more about life. Be open, and be willing to learn, I have found myself in the room as a mentee to find myself being the only one with an idea for the solution. As a mentor, your mentee's success is 100% your success but remember, not your credit. You take credit for leading them guiding them and holding them to the standards you set for them. You are valuable because you can make more of them. So remember, the more comfortable you are giving the credit where it truly belongs, the more confident you come off as.
