Yes, we all want a fast operating system for our general or specific use cases. I will be focusing on Desktop and Laptop systems running windows, linux except macOS here. I think it's pointless to talk about mobile phone OS speed due to the limitations in upgrading your os/hardware and as we are in 2024:) Your system should boot up faster with in seconds if you have your OS installed on a SSD with enough RAM. If your system is taking minutes to boot up, then some boot settings may be messed up. If you have a HDD, then take your time to boot, drink a coffee and come back;) Doing a Proper OS Re-installation will help to bring your system back to speed. If you have old hardware, then installing Linux is the way for speedy boot and performance.

After the installation of the OS, check if all things are working properly. Things like animations and app opening closing are working smoothly. If your system is compatible and fast, then there shouldn't be any issues. Before installing any OS, you should select the proper version of it. In the case of linux, there are many versions available based on the processor brand, older/newer gen hardware. So having knowledge about your hardware helps. Never install any incompatible software/drivers in your system. Don't play with disk partitions if you don't know what you are exactly doing. Check if enough storage and memory is provisioned to the OS. Remove unwanted files from your system. Look for alternative software if it is still crashing.

Check if any unwanted startup apps are enabled. If so then disable it to free cpu and memory while booting and usage. You won't notice that the app is running in the background unless you properly monitor it. Some applications may be malware also. So you should regularly monitor your system. Uninstall unwanted and suspicious applications. In linux especially in KDE, don't install any suspicious themes because I read that it's deleting user data by using rm -rf. Keep an eye on your task/resource monitors available in your OS

You can customise your OS very well if you're using GNU Linux. You can do anything like wipe all your user and system data with a command and be left with nothing:) so be careful while using linux. You can customise your OS the way you want. You can take a day or even more to find your desired look considering you have a highly customisable distro installed. Windows is also customizable to an extent.
