Learn to write a memo to The President or leader of your country. You get half a page. Paragraph one (minimum 12 pt font because Presidents usually need bigger print) sets out the problem. They deal in words and stories, which is what a President or national leader needs because numbers don't move people. Stories do.

Nevertheless, we have to get our fundamentals correctly pinned down. From our basic laws of demand and supply to Dynamic General Equilibrium or Gravity Model. If we sufficiently understand our fundamentals then we have a strong foundation to augment our knowledge and skills. Despite the advanced assessments resulting from the econometric modellings, we still have to make expert judgement as analytical elaboration is a mixed of art and science. This is where fundamentals and experiences, as the results of knowledge acquisition, will frame our expertise for our career paths.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned for maximizing growth in the economics profession is interdisciplinary knowledge. Depending on what you specialize in, I believe you'll be better economist if you not only have great understanding of economics, but also understand psychology, engineering, biology, and more. The economics profession hardly exists in a bubble.
