Familiarize yourself with the "Why" behind popular shooting setups. If you understand a) WHY an effect is used b) in WHICH circumstances, c) WHAT equipment is used, and d) HOW they are used to that effect, then you will be able to improvise to achieve the effects you want with any gear - because you have an understanding of the mechanics behind the setup! If you know YOUR gear inside and out, you will know (and be able to leverage or even exploit) it's strengths, weaknesses, & limitations to get the same or possibly better results than "better" equipment!

Light is logarithmic and not linear! In other words, if you need to brighten or dim a light that can't be adjusted any further, try moving it forward or back from your subject to increase/decrease brightness. Also, the bigger your light source diffusion, the softer the light is. This can be useful if you need to light a space with one light source but you want to keep the light soft and cinematic.
