Here are some ways to get on set and learn: Look for entry-level positions: Production assistant (PA) jobs are a great way to gain experience in various departments. You'll learn the ropes from seasoned professionals and see firsthand how different parts of the filmmaking process come together. Volunteer on student films or independent projects: These productions often need extra hands and offer valuable learning opportunities. Network with filmmakers: Attend industry events, workshops, or online forums to connect with people working in the industry. Let them know you're eager to learn and see if there are any opportunities to assist on set.

If you want to get into film, the best thing to do is go work on sets. Film is like any trade, you need to go do it. You need to have the experience, because no production company is going to ask you for a degree. Cooperations will, but studios won't. They just want to see what you can do. If you have no background or understanding then film school may be a good starting point like it was for me. However, you are going to be taught things that only partially work. The biggest reason to go to film school is to make connections and give you a basic understanding of what film is like, for it's all about who you know. Go to any major city and dig until you find its film culture and join it, get on every set. That's the real film education.

One thing I've found helpful is the good understanding and using of the common sense. Eventhough it sounds a bit banal, it is rare to occur in most professionals in critical situations such as handling something you have had little experience with. Even Albert Einstein made two different sized holes in his door for both a big and a small cat. Failing to realise that small cat can use the big hole as well and hence the making of a second small hole in the door was unnecessary. Such common sense can be hard to occur unless you have had more of a practical experience More you experience it, easier it gets to see things in a simple way.

Nothing beats field experience. The more you do it, the better you are at it. With the versatility of tv/film production and the range of challenges you face with each production, your ability to proffer solutions on the spot is directly proportional to how many times you or your colleague(s) have experienced it in the past. No classroom prepares you for the reality of being in charge of a project with so many moving parts. From managing yourself to managing other, experience is the best teacher.

Be bendable; humble and open to learn from those more experienced and skilled. Be hands-on; shadow on set. Get a coach or a mentor. Also remember that what works for A and/or C might not work for you. Therefore, carve your own niche, then, teach others. After all, where’s the joy to learn and not share that knowledge?

When I travel, I always have my camera with me. This way, I film interesting angles or shots. Then, I try to play with the shots from my travels in post-production, with sound design. I put them together and change order, trying to build a story. Some shots work perfectly together with the right sound. This way, many experimental films are born.

Then finding a way to intern with professionals in the the filmmaking business will also work like magic. Start with whatever tool you have and dream big.
