in my opinion there are 3 pillar need to do; education, practice, and continuous learning. 1- Education; you need to learn the basics of the cloud what is IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, you can't secure what you don't know, then practice what you learn, after that learn a specialized cloud security courses ex; CCSK, CISSP, AWS Certified Security, etc. 2- Hands on experience; simply by working on projects that involve implementing security measures in cloud environments, this can be through your job or simulations that many training programs offer. 3- Continues learning; it’s important to keep up with the latest technologies. another Supporting Points; 1- Join professional groups and forums such as CSA. 2- be updated with the regulations & compliance

To gain practical experience with cloud security, take advantage of free credits offered by major cloud providers to set up a test environment. Start by familiarizing yourself with identity and access management, including user and application credentials and privileged accounts. Next, configure logging and monitoring to enable reconstruction of activities in the test environment. Finally, review the built-in security controls to identify default features that can enhance your defense.

Nothing beats real experience so beyond reading books, watching videos and getting certifications as this will only take you so far but getting engaged in real world peojects will get you to your goals of learning Cloud security. Talk to you peers and management and getinvolved. Projects that makes you work around security are where you can your hands dirty with Cloud IAM, authetication and authroization, security groups, tagging, access controls, and encryption etc..are some examples where you want to get engaged and build your expereince from that to become expert in Cloud security.

Once you understand how it works, now you can go into how to understand the vulnerabilities and most common threats, leading you to the design and operation of effective controls that correctly fits the size and type of every cloud. If you are not yet into IT Security/Cybersecurity, apply the same playbook, go to the basics until you get a hang of the different concepts, controls and devices, and then move to how to apply these concepts to cloud environments.

Like any other IT infrastructure, we can learn more only when we actually work on it. If you are lucky, you might be handed access in your project. If not, you can still gain valuable experience by taking advantage of free offering from the cloud service providers. This gives basic knowledge about working on the individual platforms.

The certification exams test your pinpoint knowledge and skills in the respective domain, and the studying process for that itself helps us in our careers a lot. All-in-all, having the correct certificates is always a positive for one's career.

Got my CISSP and CCSP during the infamous Covid-19 lockdown. Was a no brainier as I had so much time to study. The qualifications certainly helped me progress into Cloud security and then into my current role as Operations Risk Analyst (IT).

Acquiring certifications is certainly a good way to develop and signal your competencies. However, for them to be truly useful, one must grasp all the required fundamentals first. For example while one can try for CCSP but first clearing CISSP imparts solid foundations to build your specialty expertise upon. Similarly for AWS, starting with Cloud Solutions Architect and then progressing onto something like AWS Certified Security Specialty would set someone up for much better success. One truly needs to understand cloud technology very deeply to be able to conjure up ways to defend against the newer class of attacks.

Once you have had some experience working with cloud systems you can look at certifications. Anyone interested has 2 choices: ones specific to particular service provider & few which are vendor neutral. One can choose any certification according to one's own interest.

The security space is an ever-changing landscape. One needs to keep oneself updated on what is currently happening. Only that way we can be more effective in our roles. As one spends more time working on it would be clear that one needs to keep updated not only technical aspects but changing aspects such as regulatory requirements. So, the summary is one needs to keep updating on what is happening in the security space.

Using tools like host specific IAM and Shields helps maintain secure cloud environments, while understanding compliance requirements ensures both security and legal adherence.

I used the internal mentor program in our organisation to help me secure the roles and opportunities. You have to take ownership of your career. As corny as it sounds it’s the absolute truth. No one else is looking out for you.

While platforms like LinkedIn provide a very effortless way to network, in person networking events offer a much more immersive and rememberable experience. Quite a few cybersecurity meetups are a frequent occurrence in a large number of cities. But if there is a gap, try playing the role of a facilitator. For example, I had some time back noticed that there was no Canada focused cybersecurity reddit community. I set up the CybersecurityCanada sub and now we are already 100+ members. Similarly creating an exclusive cloud security focused meetup in your city can be a truly rewarding experience.

I attend at least one F2F a month and monitor at 2 virtual events per week. Each provides different networking approaches. I look for the silos that are connected preferably but each of the dozen have a direct coralation as potential security breaches.

Networking with other professionals in the field is an important aspect any IT professional should seriously take. This will help you grow in the long run. Some can give you career advice. Some can be very good mentors. Some might be just good to work with. Networking certainly provides one with various opportunities.

Many of the problems we see organizations struggle with when it comes to cloud security ultimately boil down to lazy, over-permissive IAM roles.
