What do you do if you want to juggle freelance work and a full-time job in video production?

Everything depends on the schedules and demands - both of your full-time job and your freelance projects. Most likely, the full-time job will come first, due to benefits and retaining the full-time job. The freelance work however, might be an Indie movie, perhaps a friend's business, a non-profit you volunteer with, or some other creative avenue that the full-time job does not offer. All of these are valid. And the freelance role can help you stretch your skills or learn new ideas, where maybe a corporate role is less creative or innovative. They both have pros and cons, both can be done successfully, but they can be sources of stress if your over-commit.

You can be a jack of all trades and a master of none. Or alternatively, and my preferred ethos, mater one trade and be the best you can be at it. I've worked with freelancers who had full-time jobs and it was difficult to fully rely on them as their schedule was very limited. I also wasn't eager to schedule them immediately after their job, since I knew they wouldn't be showing up to set with fresh energy. I'm sure there are a few scenarios where one could freelance effectivity while also working a full-time job, but for most people, it probably isn't the best way to approach freelancing. A better alternative would be to explore paid internships (as a way to replace/supplement your income.)
