I despise analogies as a tool to explain engineering problems. And I believe the use of analogies conceals insight and creates false understanding. Analogies are great for anecdotes and cocktail hour yarns, but to use them for engineering discussions reveals a lack of creativity - the inability to create a true picture of reality in the mind of the listener. You have to start with what the listener knows and build upward. And it takes creativity to do that in a way that is interesting. At best an analogy is scaffolding for a complete answer; the problem is many times the scaffolding is never removed and six months later the analogy has led to software bugs, hardware interface issues, and general stupidity.

Working effectively with other disciplines is key. A basic understanding of the needs, approaches, and methodologies will facilitate optimization. Looking for analogs is a great way to proceed. Also, getting back to optimization, all team members need to realize that no one system shall have its performance maximized to the extent that one or more systems becomes non-functional. Once change has been effected ...system verification should also be done rapidly...thus effectively implementing the change and benefitting from it rapidly.
