What do you do if you want to impress employers during an interview?

At the end of the interview ask if they have any initial concerns about your fit for the role. This gives you a great chance to add clarity and remove any reservations before leaving the interview. Speak as if you are already part of the team... "how would we tackle X challenge?" / "what challenges would we face in the first 6 months"?. The use of "we" has a magical impact on how someone perceives you after the interview as it allows then to already imagine working with you.

Don't attempt to 'wing it' in an interview! As crazy as it sounds, taking the time to research the interviewer, team, company and preparing for your interview will instantly stand you in the top 10% of candidates. My top tips to impress are; 1. Be inquisitive! Ask commercial and probing questions, always have 5-10 prepared that you can refer to. 2. Make a great first impression! Eye contact, handshake, dress code, energy and your tone of voice all count. 3. Prepare suitable examples using the STAR method for competency questions you're likely to be asked for the role, if you were the hirer, what questions would you ask to identify competencies? 4. Close! Ask the interviewer how they see you fitting in and if they have any reservations

Know who you're being interviewed by and know about the company you're seeking to be employed by. By making an observation about the company during one of your answers, that aligns an aspect or all of you with them, you demonstrate that you have done your due diligence AND that you've found why you're a potential good match for them.

Better to be too smart than too casual... It's easier to carry off a more casual approach dressed smartly than it is to carry off a professional approach dressed too casually...not impossible, just harder because the interviewer will already have made an assessment of you.

Dress professionally for the interview, taking into account the company's dress code and culture. When in doubt, it's usually better to dress slightly more formally than too casually.

Choose attire that reflects the company's culture and industry norms. Aim for professional attire that makes you feel confident and comfortable, showcasing your attention to detail and respect for the occasion.

Communicating clearly is definitely easier said than done in an interview because your nerves can easily derail you, causing you to speak quickly, trip over your words and even make your voice shake ??! These are perfectly natural stress responses, but you can definitely overcome them! 1, Practise answering questions! Practise creates familiarity, which can reduce anxiety ?? 2, Power Pose! Get to your interview early, ask to go to the bathroom and stand quietly like a superhero for 1 minute ????♀? Walk in feeling super confident and smile!?? 3, A little secret ?? is that hiring managers get nervous too!! So, strike up a conversation, a little small talk. When prepping for an interview, you can double-check the requirements for the role and select a few projects from your experiences that align with those. Then, you can prepare to discuss the context, goals, process, and outcome (including the impact on the company’s goals). You can highlight your contributions and those of others. Keeping your replies concise and structured is important—this will reassure the interviewers about your ability to communicate effectively. You can always offer to delve deeper into any points mentioned (like this, for example: “If you'd like to explore any of these topics further, let me know. I'm happy to provide as much detail as needed”).

Don't interrupt. Listen to the questions and/or tasks attentively and quietly. Take it in without rushing to answer. When you do, try to articulate your reply clearly and slowly. A professional and experienced interviewer should help you feel at ease.

During the interview, articulate your thoughts concisely and confidently. Use active listening skills to understand questions fully before responding. Avoid jargon and overly technical language unless necessary, ensuring your communication is accessible to all interviewers.

Where possible, link answers to their questions with one or more examples of where you can demonstrate the quality, skill or ability they are asking about. if you can link more than 1 then you will appear to be very experienced and able to think on your feet.

Be ready to discuss your achievements and successes in previous roles. Use specific examples to demonstrate your skills, problem-solving abilities, and contributions to your previous employers.

One of the quickest ways to stand out to anyone is to ask them a question that makes them stop and think. Here's an example of one that can work well: "If I was to be offered and accepted the job and I started tomorrow, given your knowledge of the company/team/role, what would be my single greatest challenge to become successful?"

I advise clients to always ask questions about the priorities of whoever will be their boss or supervisor. Job descriptions don't give you the full picture of what is most needed. Ask about priorities and ask early - as soon as possible. When you finish answering Tell Me About Yourself you could say, "...so that's how I contribute to the role. Maybe if you tell me your top 3 priorities for the position, I could address them specifically? You'll get what you need to answer many questions later in the interview. Examples: What are your strengths? What are you most proud of having accomplished? What makes you different than other candidates? Why should I hire you? Just tell or summarize your true S.T.A.R. stories relevant to those priorities.

Asking factual questions tends to go down well. An example would be something set against a time line, i.e. what would the ideal candidate achieve in the first month/ what would be their single biggest challenge / what tools or strategies do you use for the induction period.

I dont think you should focus on impressing the interviewer, focus on effectively communicating your abilities and showcasing your suitability for the role!

Ask detailed open-ended questions that demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the decision makers, the business, and your willingness to learn and do whatever it takes to become a valuable employee. Those questions will demonstrate that you've done your homework, that you've invested time and energy in preparing for the interview, and that you are serious about choosing their company above any other. The other thing that will set you apart is to comment on your interest and intention of remaining with the company for an extended period of time, that alone will set you apart (Whether it's true or not) and give you an edge over other candidates.

While the tips above are golden, remember: interviews are a two-way street. Don't get so focused on "impressing" that you forget your own unique value. Authenticity is key! Showcasing your genuine personality and enthusiasm for the role will leave a lasting positive impression on the interviewer. But it's also your chance to get a feel for the company culture. By being yourself, you'll spark a more natural conversation, allowing you to assess if the company's values and work environment align with your own. After all, a fantastic interview goes both ways – you want to impress them, and you want to be impressed too.
