What do you do if you want to expand your professional network through internships?

In my experience, the internship shaped the direction of my career. From the beginning of my undergraduate course, I sought to identify internship opportunities and how they could be useful in achieving my goals. It didn't work out at first, but with persistence, consistency, and intensity, I reached my objective. This path worked for me and it might be useful for you too!

Internships are a great way to expand your professional network and skills, and I wish I would have pursued them sooner! I would recommend researching all opportunities available internally. For example, when I was a student, I went to my departments (Music and Foreign Languages at the time) and then found the opportunities available at the Center for Career Engagement and Internships. From having conversations with these offices, I soon learned about even more opportunities available to me through the larger CUNY system! You can always ask your faculty and mentors for some insights and advice, and they can point you in the right direction once you have a clear sense of what you explore. You never know what can open up from a quick chat!

Leverage what career support services your institution provides, they are heavily invested in seeing you gain employment in your desired sector. Regardless of format, ultimately your resume should tell your story in a way that is easily digested and ideally engaging.

Moulding your resume as per the requirements of individual institutions offering internships will be crucial to your getting them. You should learn the art of writing resume by including in it your academic qualifications, specific courses taken and training,short term courses and Conferences attended, your significant achievements, your skills such as technical, interpersonal, negotiation skills, your areas of interest, names of distinguished referees. Align these details in consonance with the characteristics of the institution where you are applying.

For example, you can just google: "Harvard CV Template" and you will find a lot of relevant information) reach out to fellow students and colleagues who have more experience than you do and ask for their advice. Once you craft the CV, feel free to check it with your university's career development office or show it to your professors and ask for their advice.

Internships are a great way to get your “foot in the door” and show initiative while gaining valuable experience and connections. Networking throughout the process (before, during, and after the internship) will lead to valuable insight and opportunities. Connecting with your team, supervisors, and also colleagues with similar positions in parallel companies is an important tool. Most only network when needing a job, however making connections is a work tool to be used while working. Improve your networking skills and you improve your opportunities.

Explore the opportunities to make connections and demonstrate your competencies. Continuously improve them, as matching these components will likely lead to a new step in your career.

I recommend broadening the approach to include digital platforms for networking, which are essential in today's globalized educational context. Beyond leveraging existing connections, actively engage on professional networking sites like LinkedIn. Create content, join discussions, and connect with leaders in your field of interest. For example, by commenting thoughtfully on posts by industry experts or sharing articles relevant to your desired field, you establish visibility and credibility. Many schools partner with Handshake, an organization that focuses on bringing together students looking for internships with companies offering internships. Even if you attend a school that does not partner with Handshake, some services and opportunities are available. Handshake has job fairs and posts internship positions at a large variety of companies across many fields. This is definitely one avenue to use to build connections. And no, I am not affiliated with Handshake. I do wish my daughter had known about it when she was working on her digital marketing degree.

The advice I often give students is when building your network, especially through a tool like LinkedIn, aim to build connections before transactions. Reaching out to someone offering to trade a coffee for 15 minutes of their time will go a lot further than going straight to asking for an internship, or worse just a random connection request without any accompanying message. You will still get a lot of "no's" and non-replies but your overall positive response rate will be higher.

In my experience of hiring interns, one piece of advice I always give is that this should be an opportunity to gain exposure to a variety of experiences. When you are asked to do tasks A and B, make sure you also explore C, D, and E. Going beyond what is asked of you is always valuable to the organization, but the experience you gain from undertaking C, D, and E is invaluable. This is what separates them from others.

The intern is the one with immunity, we forgive him, we're a bit paternalistic with him in a way. He needs to take advantage of this period to try out of the box things out and take a bit of risk. He must not be a schoolboy. He would have all his life time to be serious. That doesn't mean to do nonsense things, just to be bold !

We must work very hard during our time there to achieve the best possible results, but we also need to nurture the relationships that have emerged during that time so that new publications, joint projects, or other opportunities can arise from them.

Finally, it's advisable to follow up with contacts after the internship to maintain relationships

Internships are a great way to learn in real life scenarios with minimum risk and maximum experience. I advise my students to 1) Grab every opportunity possible to intern. During holidays is the best time. During semester time also, take remote/ online projects 2) Be sincere, work hard and complete assignments on time. 3) It’s great to get paid internships, but if you get some chances to do pro bono work also, do it to your best ability. Experience counts 4) Get your employers certification for your work. 5) Maintain good relationships with your employers even after the project is completed. 6) Share your experience on LinkedIn with appropriate # so enhance your visibility

Be different and unique in your presentation and keep courtesy and polite behaviour as fundamentals. Be a great listener and observe people. Be fearless to ask innocent questions to clarify any small dot. Read and write to evolve your expression. Ask and tell, as per the situation. A thank you note is always good.

Look for opportunities to network! Use your university’s career center as a jumping off point or your local county’s job board and google search job fairs in your area and attend them! Make the most of every opportunity and identify the companies you most want to intern for and search for employees on LinkedIn that work there. It will help you to see their pathway and you can even try to cold message them with an intro and reason for connecting! Don’t be afraid, be brave and work those resources!
