What do you do if you want to excel in reservoir engineering within the Oil and Gas sector?

There are no magic or quick solutions to this. One has to acquire this through a solid academic background. Reservoir engineering is a specialization in petroleum engineering. However, a few other branches of engineering also build the core course capability and prepare for a shorter term specialization in reservoir engineering. Aside from the basic reservoir engineering, one then has to get acquainted with the field specific gas or oil recovery techniques, which are typically very different from each other. This is not to scare anyone, as it is all very doable, but all of it takes time and persistence.

I have had the pleasure of working with excellent reservoir engineers, and these are some common traits I have observed: - Strong fundamentals and understanding of reservoir engineering concepts (this is key to mastering the fancy stuff) - Field experience especially on the production operations side helps have a wider perspective - Excellent reservoir engineers are 'armchair' gemodellers, petrophysicists, and so on. They understand enough of these disciplines to ask questions and collaborate during FDP studies - Have some coding skills - The technical reference manuals for the software they use are always open - Understand statistics and probability - Continuous learning with a natural curiosity, not as a chore

To build a solid foundation in reservoir engineering it's important to have a strong grip on geology, then later on you can build and expand on that. Reservoir Engineering has various sub disciplines for which you might need to refer to different literature sources and one source may not be comprehensive enough for all the disciplines, such as Tarek Ahmed, Craft, Cosse, Dake, Amyx, etc. Based on a solid literature foundation then you can apply this knowledge while you work on them as part of your job.

Personally practical experience really boasts your confidence towards the subject that will definitely help you crack your interviews to work in real. So that’s the bigger picture you will have to aim. Industry needs people that are well prepared ahead of joining companies so that they take less time to actually imbibe.

Simulation learning will definitely make you a front runner in the oil and gas industry! Some software that might help you as a RE are Petrel, CMG, IPM, KAPPA, Python, Power Bi etc.

Reservoir Engineering is a very specific yet interesting domain of the petroleum engineering cluster. It deals with initial well testing till field abandonment. The entire economics is developed and revolves around the RE team. No one can be a good reservoir engineer as a fresher.
