What do you do if you want to establish positive employee relations during an interview?

There are various ways to build rapport with candidates during the interview stage. When the candidates are invited to attend interview, 1) provide clear directions of the venue/office with nearest MRT stations, nearest bus stop(s), bus route numbers that call at the bus stop(s), landmarks etc. 2) Provide the names of the interviewers so that candidates can find out the background of the interviewers through LinkedIn or other means. 3)Interviewers to remain professional and friendly throughout the interview. 4) By being prepared, such as reading the CV prior to the interviews, getting the possible questions ready, by the interviewers, it sets the interview in the right to be and candidates will feel that they are being respected.

During the interview process it’s important to set the tone from the beginning. I like to make the candidate feel welcomed and comfortable during the initial phase of the meeting. I also ask the candidate to walk me through their career journey, but I tell them not to leave anything out. I like to hear the good, bad, learnings opportunities, etc. during this stage, I make sure to remain engaged, interested, and encouraging. I like to applaud them for their efforts and especially if they’ve overcome challenges. I also share the good and challenging aspects of the job they are considering. I tell them that we want to make sure that this is right for them. Being genuine is the key to building rapport.

I feel clarifying the role expectations right at beginning of the interview helps the candidate. Off course goes without saying that a detailed JD is important and should be shared with the candidate well in advance. During the interview, keep an eye on the body language of the candidate. If you feel they are getting nervous, offer them water and ask them to relax. Check if they want few moments to gather their thoughts. Clarify the questions that you asking and candidate's understanding of it. Paraphrase and summarize your understanding and asked the candidate if they want to fill in any gaps. These are few things that i practice when i interview.

Some of the things I found helpful are: ?? Being punctual for the interview, thank them for their time, offer water and indicate where the bathroom is so they can use it if needed. ?? Even before ?? I call from my cell phone and tell them that they can call me directly if they have any questions or even whatsapp me (which is less formal) . We have to demystify this process, it is a 2 way street and as employers we need to put in the effort and get the candidates "buy in". ?? Acknowledge any signs of anxiety and reassure them that this is just a conversation, often times tell them that they won't remember me in 5 years if they don't get the job so this is not a big deal I try to be as natural as possible and avoid stiffness ??

Candidates apply for the job based on the description. Once they join if they see a disconnect between the JD and actual responsibility, it does makes them feel cheated.

Most important is that you are prepared as n interviewer so that the candidate feels that you have spent time in reading their resume and are well prepared for taking the interview. Ensuring that the start and end time are met is another way of showing respect. Close the interview with feedback and next steps so that the candidate is not kept hanging.

Its very simple: Before the interview one should know about few things, it boosts your confidence in the stage area. - Learn about your future KRAs before hand (from the JD) - Always infuse Importance of Technology in your talks (especially support function profiles) - Always learn about the tech tools available in the market which are used in your profile. - Learn about the company’s past / present and Future. - Be authentic and creative with thoughts. - Use intellectual humour in the talks. - Never say Never because there is always a scope of up-skilling / upgrading / evolving. - Make your CV / Resume creative and crisp. - Don’t be a leech from day 0. Apply brains if you actually fits there.

I have observed that certain questions asked by the candidates, gave me better understanding of the candidates suitability for the job. The interviewer needs to pay close attention to the questions and respond in a thoughtful manner. A candidate asking questions is a candidate truly interested in the position.

If the candidate had questions that could not be fully answered during the interview, consider following up with substantive answers. 2. If it is clear the candidate is not a good fit, try to promptly follow-up with that decision so that the candidate knows not to hold out expectations. 3. Most of us hope for quick feedback after an interview in order to make informed decisions. If you are not in a position to make a decision within a day or two, touch base to let the candidate know they are still under consideration. If possible, provide a reasonable estimate on when they may expect a decision.
