Online courses are an excellent option to save time and money, as well as to learn to organize your time to take them at a pace that is comfortable. Personally, I love the scope it has and the potential it can take a person to in a matter of months. Discipline and motivation is necessary to be successful in this strategy.

If you enjoy learning new and innovative ideas to improve and customize your events, take an online course as time permits in your schedule. You will be surprised how much is (out there) even for those of us that have been in the industry for years!

What immediately comes to mind is two things: 1. Do some courses - Whether in person or online. But just not any courses, courses that improve your weak areas and give a boost in an aspect of event planning you haven't mastered yet that makes you a bigger sell. 2. Volunteer - People often take this for granted or don't see the merit. Volunteering, especially if it is for a good cause, keeps you active and cuts out any resume gaps. It also allows you to experiment productively.

There are tons of community related events that one could volunteer to organize. One example are Kubernetes Community days of the CNCF. It’s a great way to learn. Lots of playbooks are already available and the CNCF supports organizers with helpful resources.

Maybe it's not volunteer work but at the events I attended at my former jobs, I always tried to offer my time as a staff to be able to support anything they might need, if I've learned anything over the years, it's never enough when it comes to of excellence in an event and especially because on the day of the event the organizers are tired after arduous days of preparation. Asking them if they have already eaten, if we can help with bringing something or solving something, always makes a difference.

When layed off, you will have time to let your creativity flow. Even while watching tv..reading, walking and viewing nature and just letting your mind and body relax and allow new ideas to form in a non work environment.
