Educate yourself is key, as you will only have the initial lived experience to share at first, so being able to Educate yourself on more within the community helps you understand others as well as yourself. I always explain how my experience as a trans woman may differ to other trans woman, because so many factors play a part in our lived experiences which we all need to take into account. I have learnt so much about other people's journeys and transitions and continue to do so.

I have always used the phrase "Stop shouting and start listening" because at the moment there seems to be a lack of listening when it comes to real people's lived experiences within the LGBTQ+ space. For anyone who wants to learn more about the community, whether you are a part of it or not, must ensure active listening is applied. This can mean simply allowing individuals to share their story without you having to find a way for yourself to relate to it, adapt to it or even fully understand it. LGBTQ+ experiences are unique lived experiences and sometimes you just need sit back and take all the information without trying to figure it out to fit your own narrative. It can be difficult to do, but it's very helpful in the end.

I always have to check my own privilege, bias and self when learning about other people and their journeys within the LGBTQ+ space. It can be very easy to get caught up I believing that my own loved experiences is the only way or that others experience the same. The level of education and awareness changes with each person and allows you to learn so much more. I would be a hypocrite if I didn't admit my bias or judgement kicks in when I see other trans people present themselves in a way I wouldn't, but I just have to remember about their journey od others, the support and understanding they may or may not have and how I can only learn more about them through interacting. There is no one size fits all approach to being LGBTQ+

Don’t assume pronouns based on appearance. Don’t assume gender based on appearance. Ask someone’s pronouns no matter how they present. If you make asking pronouns a regular part of how you interact with people you are removing the stigma attached to someone having to correct you. Also you can not tell by appearance so you are actively showing yourself to be an ally by allowing for other people’s pronouns to be used correctly.
