The tools must remain in the background. While the experience can be enhanced by the tools, it cannot be based solely on them. Most of the value is created by the coach and his relationship with the client. The tool comes on top, as a bonus to simplify or enhance the experience. So make sure the need is expressed BEFORE the tool is sourced and selected. At the risk of having to adapt the coaching to the tool and not the other way round.

Commitment is the key. The first lever of commitment is the relationship between coach and coachee. The tool comes next. It can help to keep the coachee's thoughts on the coaching process fresh in their minds. It can enable them to test their new ways of thinking. A tool that gamifies these aspects is a plus, so that the client finds pleasure and motivation in connecting to the tool on a regular basis. But the main motivation must remain the coaching objective. The tool can therefore help to regularly reconnect the client with this objective. For example, by helping them to visualise, contextualise and explore all aspects of the situation, both positive and negative.

I use these virtual collaboration tools to keep tabs on how we're doing with our goals and get input from the client. We'll have regular catch-up sessions to go over progress, gather any info we need, and do a little performance check. If we need to tweak things based on what we learn, we do that. Whether it's changing up our approach or trying out different tools, I jot down all our progress, and the clients feedback, and any changes we make so we can keep things on track with what the client wants to achieve.

It is important to ensure that the tool does not add friction to the customer experience. A coachee will tend to give up when they get to the difficult part of the process. At this stage, any excuse to stop can be exploited to return to the comfort zone. So be careful when selecting a tool, even if it means using very basic things first, such as PDFs, templates to fill in, etc.

As coaches, if we learn the art of facilitation, whether in-person or virtually, it will not only enhance the coachee's experience but also make the session more creative, interactive, and exploratory. As an Agile coach working in many industries with numerous teams and executives, I believe although virtual tools provide convenience and flexibility, they may not fully replace the value of face-to-face communication and connection. Therefore, I think it would be beneficial to incorporate occasional in-person meetings or retreats, if feasible, to deepen the relationships and strengthen the coaching experience.
