What do you do if you want to enhance collaboration with diverse teams through temporary and contract work?

We talk about "safe spaces" and "brave spaces" or "feel comfortable" to share viewpoints and express opinions. Organisational hierarchies and human power dynamics in temporary and contract work can be heightened. A contractor or temporary worker is already an outsider. They naturally want to fit in - they are unlikely to upset the boat and have a different opinion. Even if there role is to challenge and bring in new ideas - they will do so in a way to satisfy the contract provider. So while valuing different opinions and culture is critical, accepting different views - creating spaces is more than a few words. Try anonymous channels, individual feedback and other ways to allow views to be heard, even when trust might be absent.

1. All team members should get training on the value of inclusion and diversity in the workplace. This can foster understanding and raise awareness among team members. 2. Temping and contracting is on the rise, why? You have more control over hours, time and this suits more and more people. In a team, everyone wants to value each other and get the most from each other, while each member in the team is in the best position and most comfortable working environment possible. In my experience, it is very important to set clear benchmarks or expectations in the following categories so that team members across groups are aligned. 1. Communication is key, especially with temporary or contract workers. They are external, they do not have the inside lingo, knowledge of what is ok and what is not - or what the best channels are. Often an organisation will have different channels and it takes a while to know which are used and for what. To start having human to human connection is important -either physically or virtually - allow time for relationships and trust. So the person behind the ideas - that will give them a chance to grow trust, confidence and courage to share their thoughts and opinions, especially if they are different to status quo.

Setting clear objectives, roles and expectations is the first step that the team needs to focus on. The team members should be sensitized to the diversity that they have to deal with. The behaviour of the members should not be judged unnecessarily as some times the behaviour which may appear to be wierd is actually issue of different in culture.

Building trust is easier said than done. It comes with time, understanding each other - sharing vulnerabilities - time for the human to human connection without competition. This can be complicated when temporary workers or contractors are just there to perform a specific tasks for a set time - why take the time and energy to expose yourself, be vulnerable, and connect with others? Creating opportunities for collaboration without competition and connection with curiosity are important - so shared experiences can be created and become a foundation for trust.

Trust is, was and in future would become the most important currency in the world. It's important for the leader to sensitized all the members that with all our diversity we are working for a common goal. It Is always good to have at least few members in a team who have experience in dealing with diverse teams.

I strongly believe in the celebration element raised here. Celebrating new ways of working, celebrating different ideas, celebrating difference... these are all important aspects. Setting the tone that all ideas are welcome and encouraged. That working together for shared success is a priority - that learning from failures is what we do, so we can grow. Human nature dictates for us to want to fit in, model leaders... so creating a climate where ideas different that the current leadership are welcome is not always as easy as we think - but well worth it

Consider what works best for the business/organisation. Whilst contracting/temp arrangements may seem like a good idea, how does it work for the business structure, project delivery, team members already engaged. What does it mean for outcome/KPI delivery? Does the work support this arrangement long-term?

Being present, aware, listening and adapting will always lead to better communication, better collaboration and better results. Be open and compassionate. Believe that everyone can learn from someone if they allow themselves to be open to new ideas and new ways. Look at diversity, change, and challenges as opportunities to learn and grow.
