I participated as a mentee in a 6-month program. My recommendations are: - unlike coaching where you work out solutions based on what you know about yourself, in mentoring you will receive advice directly on certain specific topics. - It's interesting to have more than one mentor, and not just focus on one. The idea is to receive diverse contributions. - avoid very close friends or family as mentors, as the emotional side can take over the process and not be as effective as desired. - combine availability, meeting format, duration and frequency. - I recommend mentors who also work outside the risk area, so that you can bring new elements to the process. - do not make the topic too general, as it may be difficult to reach a conclusion.

I mentored at my workplace and the mentee was from a different area of the business. My comments from that mentoring experience is: - to allow the mentee to take responsibility in exploring areas of developments so that it is meaningful to the mentee; - to avoid providing readymade answers to issues and challenges but guide the mentee to explore answers; - be open to learning from the mentee's experiences as I found our discussions to be a learning for me (too).
