I’ve found flashcards to be most helpful in learning the meaning of words that are “basic.” By this I don’t necessarily mean words you hear used all the time that are simple—but words that do not have complicated social or situational connotations. There’s more to a word than just its meaning after all. There is a cultural aspect to language that can be hard to surmise on a flashcard.

For spelling errors, I will use different UK, USA, and other continents' spelling ideas or vocabulary that are different but have the same content or context. For example. Brinjal in India, Egg Plant in USA & Canada and Obereggen in UK.

Flashcards are extremely useful when it comes from practicing what has been learned. Some people are more visual than others, so designed flashcards or even websites that offer creative cards and quizzes are great options for those students. As an EFL teacher, I like to use tools like these to enhance student’s vocabulary and immerse them into a totally new scenerio, where they are the actors of the learning process and by doing so they also practice their discussion and critical thinking in the target language.
