Most of the people that enter into the insurance industry, don't know what's about. I would honestly recommend to try everything. Go to every area, understand the different insurance lines. Explore how each interact and the impact in the value chain. Once you find your preferences or your strengths, become a specialist. Give all you have in order to excel.

Professional networks are an amazing way to build your personal brand, while also gaining new knowledge. For individuals who are new to insurance, I highly recommend searching for a local chapter of the Emerging Insurance Professional (EIP) organization. This is an active organization, with many events held throughout the year. Participating can allow you to build up a cohort of peers, with similar industry tenure and experience levels.

Insurance is a commodity. Knowing that is the same everywhere in there world it's gold. It's like talking the same language. One of the most impactful things in my career has been the industry specialized network I've develop. This gives you a correct tool for improving and collaboration.

For those on the go, podcast are an even better way to learn about the industry in a conversational format. This may actually work better for some people, since on podcast they normally explain complex topics a little more than they would in a publication where they assume the audience already understands it.

Expose yourself to everything. Find someone you admire in the industry, follow his steps, and learn. This is very relevant for brooding your expertise. If possible, shadow insurance professionals working in different sectors. Observe their daily tasks, ask questions, and gain firsthand experience in their areas of specialty.
