What do you do if you want to boost your Civil Engineering career through community volunteering?

Identifying my interests and researching local organizations to offer my skills. Joining professional associations and participating in disaster relief efforts. Documenting my experiences and networking to build relationships and develop new skills.

I saw a need to dewater and mitigate the flood plains and overburdened stream beds in myarea. We live on the confluence of two major Rivers and are susceptible to snow runoff from our Mountain Community. I see people losing their homes to velocity run off that can easilybe prevented. I used my own land as Proof of Concept. I used. 40 , 40 ton dump trucks of fill, placed pipes throughout the land to ensure proper water flow, cut in a Culvert and added Boulders and with Gabion Baskets and SmallRocks . This stopped the velocity of the water and let me redirect it to a safe area I made boulder walls five feet high . The run off hit and bounced into the Culvert.i handed my design and plans to the Town free of charge with proof of concept.

To boost my civil engineering career through volunteering, should start by identifying needs within my community, mostly jobs that might not attract compensation, but they serve as stepping stones to my career boost, providing visibility, adding value. I remember when I had to supervise my community water pumping station civil works,it was for a not for profit organization, but that job served as a referral for my next job.

Active networking is very vital to my career advancement and volunteering is key. Using my community water pumping station project as an example,the job provided me the opportunity to network with the management of the organization,the technical team members and other government personnel involved in the project. I was very communicative and they were impressed with my quality of work, which met the required standard,and the project itself was a fundamental community development scheme, that provided clean water for the people in the community.

Again using my experience on the community water pumping station project as a viewpoint, It provided me first hand experience in the reticulation phase of the project,I gained ample experience in laying of pipes which I never had before the project,the technical skills in laying pipes so water can flow using the force of gravity, which reduces the cost of maintenance by the community. These skills are well valued in the civil engineering profession, especially the water pumping and reticulation projects in Nigeria, Africa.

Values and commitment to social responsibility is highly rated by organizations ,and employers find it very important. It's all about sustainability going forward,it's all about responsible engineering,so aligning closely with sustainable development projects and goals, providing vital infrastructure,shows keenly my skills as an engineer that is interested in providing sustainable solutions,and this is a game changer in my career advancement and the fulfilment of corporate social responsibility agenda of any responsible organization.

The mindset of continuous learning is a positive one, and it keeps me abreast of latest civil engineering technologies,which is key to my career advancement. Volunteering provides a major platform in this regard as every project present opportunity as we confront challenges and surmounting them, that's majorly how we gain quality experience in the field of civil engineering profession.
